Why this must be read: In this fic, Faith comes to visit Buffy in Rome. As always with them, things are more complicated than they sound. I really love the way Lillian writes Faith here, and the way she shows the relationship between them to be fraught with friction of all kinds; Buffy and Faith simply seem to wake up around each other. The dialogue and subtly layered emotional dynamics are simply exquisite, and I can easily see this as a natural continuation of canon.

“And that’s supposed to mean what? I don’t know this Immortal dude from jack. For all I know he could be some serial looney tune demon guy.” Faith walked on ahead of Buffy, then called back over her shoulder. “And so, does this mean that Angel’s fair game now?”

“What?”

“Angel’s off the market now you’ve got this Immortal guy. C’mon, B, keep up.”

Buffy trotted off behind Faith, annoyed that her legs had followed Faith’s instruction and grabbed the collar of her coat. “What the hell are you talking about?”

As Buffy fell into step beside the other girl, and they wandered aimlessly through the Roman streets, Faith wondered, “Well, you’ve moved on. To Gianluca.” Only the way she said his name made it seem like he was a porn star, in contrast to the severity of tone Buffy was used to associating with the Immortal. “That leaves the playing field open for the rest of us. I could, say, go for Angel now. Or Spike. That would be cool too. Gettin’ cosy with a coupla vamps, just what a Slayer needs to keep her occupied.” Faith’s eyes took on a dreamy glow and Buffy could only imagine what was going on inside her mind. Ok, imagine with vivid graphics because it wasn’t as if the same idea hadn’t flitted across her mind as well.
