Why this must be read:
Somehow,
atrata has managed to contain in one fic every kind of tension known to man. It's not just the sexy variety, even though it barely took half a page before I was yelling at the boys to just tear each other's clothes off already.
The guys are at each other's throats from the beginning, for a whole mess of reasons. In great, economical but still snarkily funny RayK-voice, we get a fabulous show-don't-tell look at all the many, many ways in which Fraser can drive a person crazy: we see the many, many ways in which RayK doesn't deal with this in a rational, coherent manner.
"No," Ray snaps, and it's all he can do not to put his fist into a wall or a window or Fraser's face. "No, Fraser, all right is not something I am. I almost shot you."
Fraser reaches for the hem of his peacoat and puts his fingers through a bullet hole Ray didn't even know was there. He feels his mouth working but he can't say anything, can't do anything, and he slides to his knees and grabs at Fraser's coat, his own fingers through the bullet hole and his head against Fraser's thigh.
"You didn't shoot me, Ray," Fraser says, reasonable and calm and infuriating. He's not moving, and his fingers are still and steady against Ray's, which won't stop shaking. Ray hits him in the thigh with his free hand.
There are awesome cases. There is badassed competence on both their parts. There's Dead!Bob, and Dief, who as always is smarter than all the humans put together.
There is a scene where Fraser licks Ray's hand.
It's angsty and nasty and heartachy and hotter than blazes. It's incredibly well-written. Go. Read.
