Sweet Nothings for the Numb by Amal Nahurriyeh (NC-17)
Howdy! I'm Maidenjedi, back for what I believe is my third time reccing The X-Files fic on Crack Van. My tastes run the gamut in this fandom, and I honestly can't predict for you what will strike my fancy. Except to say, of course, that I still am a huge fan of the minor and fan-maligned characters in the series, so expect some of that this month from me.
To start with, I thought I'd give you one of the "new classics" in the fandom.
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: 10,000+ words
Author on LJ:
amalnahurriyeh
Author Website: Livejournal
Why this must be read: Amal is one of the "new" authors in the fandom, but has established herself as one of the best of all time with her lyrical writing. So to start with, you need to read this to "get" the "new" X-Files realm and the powerful writing that has come out in the last year and a half. This is old school, though. Amal takes on Scully, post-"Emily," some of the trickiest canon to navigate. She establishes Scully's scarred and raw emotional state directly after the curtain closes on the episode, so fair warning to all who venture: this includes infertility trauma and dark, unhappy sex. This is Mulder and Scully during some of the most trying times in their partnership, professionally but especially on a personal level.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm an angst junkie, but this goes beyond usual angst and explores Scully and Mulder on a deep, true level. Frankly, I've never read them from a more human point-of-view.
You do need a working knowledge of the show up through season five to get the plot, but the emotion is enough to make this readable for anyone remotely familiar with the show. Again, warnings: dark and graphic sex, infertility trauma. Possibly triggery if you've been down that road.
