Why this must be read: Melissa Scully is one of those X-Files characters for whom we don't have alot of canon. She's one of those characters with a largely unknown backstory, whose presence onscreen was often unsatisfying because it was scant. Good fanfiction about her, that doesn't actually revolve around Scully or Mulder, is rare and tree has done such a wonderful job here, it's almost impossible to imagine other Melissas.

This takes place after the season one episode "Beyond the Sea" - so for it to be about Melissa, and to explore her so well in so short a space is amazing. The episode was Scully-centric and tackles a lot of Scully's issues regarding her father, and this story does the same for Melissa in some ways. It weaves the tale behind Melissa's canon absence from her family life, and gives insights into the sisterly relationship that real sisters are going to recognize easily.
