Why this must be read: At my personal LJ, I commented how I'd like to see a fan fiction story about what Sarah Jane Smith was doing during Torchwood: Children of Earth. The always wonderful wendymr pointed me towards "Foot-Soldier," which not only follows Sarah Jane but also Martha, the Brig, Donna, and Mickey during CoE and Gwen immediately afterward. Even though I originally asked about Sarah Jane, I think Martha's section is my favorite, because I thought Martha's failure to help save the world in CoE was Rusty's biggest plot-hole the biggest question-mark in the miniseries. Despite being based on an unrelentingly dark series, there's still a warmth and humor to this story, without undermining canon's themes.
