that other boyband

The Backstreet Boys: an overview

The Backstreet Boys were formed in 1993 by businessman Lou Pearlman, who ran advertisements in the Orlando press for boys 16-19 who could sing and dance. He ended up with Nick Carter, AJ McLean, Howie Dorough and Kevin Richardson. Lou decided they needed another member, and Kevin called his cousin Brian Littrell in Kentucky and pulled him out of math class. Brian auditioned over the phone and was on a plane to Florida the next day.

The band performed in and around Orlando before releasing their first single in the US in 1995, which flopped. They then went to Europe for several years and became superstars. Success at home soon followed. In 1998 they realised Lou Pearlman was screwing them, and they sued him. Unfortunately, they ended up with a far worse deal than NSync (who also sued Pearlman, in 1999), and they still pay him a significant percentage of their royalties.

They've released 5 albums, which have sold sixty million copies worldwide.

They've been on hiatus since 2002. The first time they made an appearance as a group during the hiatus was on Oprah, in December last year; AJ was doing a show about his alcoholism, and the rest of the boys made a surprise visit to show their support. Shortly afterwards they announced that they were getting back together. Since then they've made two group appearances, at the Billboard Awards and the Grammys, and they're currently in the studio working on a new album. Backstreet fandom is a happy place to be these days, with lots of exciting new canon on the horizon.

Kevin Richardson

At 32 he's the oldest member of the group, and he's often referred to as the father figure by the other Boys. Tastes may vary as to whether this is in a naughty, Daddy spank me kind of way. He married Kristin Willits in 2000, who he'd been dating on and off since the band started. He's very involved with environmental issues - he has an environmental charity (Just Within Reach), did a National Geographic PSA, and testified before Congress about strip-mining in the Kentucky mountains. Appeared in stage productions of Chicago in New York and London as Billy Flynn over the hiatus. You will eventually stop being scared by his eyebrows.

Howie Dorough

The gay one. Shy, doesn't tend to talk much in interviews. His mother is Puerto Rican and his father is Irish, and he's 30 years old. He's disturbingly fond of purple, and used to wear a lot of really girly shirts. He had a winking habit that was on the verge of being a facial tic, and we're all very glad he stopped doing that. He went to the same college as Chris Kirkpatrick, from NSync. He was very close to his sister Caroline, who died of Lupus in 1998, and he later founded the Dorough Lupus foundation. When the group started out he was very dorky indeed, but over time he has slowly become hotter and hotter, and at this point spontaneous internal combustion surely cannot be far off.

Brian Littrell

Kevin's cousin. He just turned 29. Strongly religious, but fairly private about it. He had open-heart surgery in 1998 for a congenital heart disorder. Lou's management team made him put off the surgery for six months because their schedule had already been booked, and he was back on stage six weeks after the operation, with an oxygen tank in the wings in case he collapsed. He met his wife (Leighanne) on the set of the video for As Long As You Love Me. They also got married in 2000, and had a son, Baylee, in October last year. He's a really good basketball player, despite being a midget, and he's very goofy.

AJ McLean

The wild one. A little too wild, as it turned out; he went into rehab in 2001. He has many, many tattoos, and he's fond of ridiculous hats. He takes his shirt off a lot. He's 26. It used to be very rare to catch him in public without a pair of sunglasses on, but post-rehab he's wearing them a lot less. He's very outgoing and will talk about anything. He also performs as his alter-ego, Johnny No Name, and gives the proceeds to charity. He and Brian get along really well, and often do publicity stuff together.

Nick Carter

The baby of the group, he was just 13 when the band formed. He's now 24. Frequently seen in NSync crossovers. He launched a solo career over the hiatus; his album sales were disappointing, especially compared to the sales of Justin Timberlake's debut solo album, which was released a week later. However, that didn't seem to stop him having a hell of a good time. In the early days of the group, he and Brian were almost inseparable, but after Brian got married, he and Howie became joined at the hip. Or somewhere. ::cough:: He's very close to his three sisters and his younger brother, Aaron, who is also a pop star and started out in the business at the ripe old age of 9. His mother is usually characterised as somewhere between cold and mercenary, and Satan. Nick had a falling out with her in 2000, and Aaron, who she was acting as a manager for, actually sued her last year for mismanaging his money, although he later dropped the case.

A few media files, if anyone wants to see them in action:
Surprising AJ on Oprah. Mucch hgging ensues. (7.5Mb)
"We shower together." And Howie and Nick are practically making out in the middle of the interview. (9Mb)
Kevin and Nick talk about one of their videos, and touch each other a whole lot. (1Mb)

Pop fandom really doesn't have any central archives, but here are a few places to start:
The Backstreet Intra-Index - a listing of Backstreet stories, by pairing. It's not a complete list, but it's a great place to start.
Don We Now Our Gay Apparel - the yearly Backstreet, NSync and crossover Secret Santa challenge, run by Pet and Georgina.
Backstreet Pairing Pictures - like it says. Much cuteness.
The Backstreet Challenge Index - all the responses to the challenges on [livejournal.com profile] bsbslashfic.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] eponymous, [livejournal.com profile] sinbrat and [livejournal.com profile] alasen for their help with this thing. Without them, it would be a lot shorter and fact-free. *g*
