Because it's April Fool's and what better way could there be to start the month than with a fic that makes clever use of pranks?
The story is set in the early days of Hornblower's service and his relative inexperience is showing. During a shore leave, his friend Kennedy decides to have a bit of good natured fun at his expense. Horatio is less than amused. What begins with a harmless joke escalates into something entirely different and by the end of the story they've both learned a thing or two about themselves and one another. I'm a sucker for stories that depict the pair of them as young midshipmen and there are fewer than one might expect. This story is sweet, but never cloying and there is an exuberance and lightheartedness throughout that makes it a nice counterpoint to the seriousness and angst that dominates this fandom. You'll find yourself chuckling more than once as you read this story .
