The Uncharted Sea by mahoni (R)
Hi! I'm
turloughishere and I'm driving the crack van for bandom in September. I'm a total My Chem girl so you can expect most of the stories I'm going to rec this month to be centered around MCR. The story I'm starting with has equal amount of My Chem and Panic though.
Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Gerard/Bob & Jon/Brendon
Length: ~119,000 words
Author on LJ:
mahoni
Author Website: The author's bandom fic tag
Why this must be read:
Jon is a crook who tries using his shady skills to do good things for a change. Gerard is stuck on a pirate ship, looking for a way off.
This is one of the most captivating, beautiful, and terrifying stories to ever come out of bandom. It has pirates, magic, ray guns, evil robots, dragons, and many other things besides, and it's an incredibly rich story with several interweaving plotlines, spectacular worldbuilding, and absolutely first class characters and character development. It's not a easy story to read though and I often ended up feeling completely twisted up inside. It deals with several troubling themes and the warnings in the header are there for a very good reason. The story might be taking place in a fantasy universe but the characters and what happens to them feel terrifyingly real. I know this is a story that's going to stay with me for a long, long time.
Excerpt from the story:
Bob had seen what the captain was going to do to Gerard, and he hadn't turned around and left. He had gotten so angry. Bob, who wouldn't defend himself when pirates got drunk and decided to trash his galley with him in it, had hit the captain with a fucking skillet because of what he was doing to Gerard.
When did this become normal?
Mikey and Frank blinked at him, and he realized he'd said it out loud. He closed his eyes. He was this close to blubbering like a fucking baby. Yes, he was tired, he hurt, and he was having a pretty sucky day, but like hell was he going to cry.
He held it back and opened his eyes, and looked at Mikey.
It had been a really long time since Gerard had thought about trying to escape. He hadn't thought about it, because it was impossible; the captain had made it impossible. Ever since the first time he and Mikey had tried and failed, Gerard had done his best to just not think about it.
But there it was suddenly, stuck in his mind. Because he was seeing again the look in Bob's eyes and this shouldn't be normal.
He had to swallow a few times before he could speak, and by that time his eyes had started to water and blur.
"We -" Fuck, his voice was shaking. Fuck that. He pressed his hands against his eyes to hold back the tears and said, "Mikey, we have to get off this ship."
