Ordinary World by i_am_your_spy (R)
Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing/Characters: Rorschach/Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan, others
Length: Multi-part series
Author on LJ:

Author Website: Collected fic post
Why this must be read:
I mentioned before that I was going to be going back to rec some of the real jewels of pre-movie Watchmen fandom in my introductory post.
This is one of them.
Ordinary World and its sequels, of which there are two, are the original exploration of the idea "What if Rorschach had survived Antarctica?". In many ways this fic set the tone for all the others that have followed in post-movie fandom.
Ordinary World tells the story of Rorschach and Daniel Dreiberg as they struggle to move on with their lives even as the shadows of Adrian Veidt and Karnak hang over them. Rorschach wants justice. Daniel wants to keep the both of them alive. Unfortunately, the two goals oppose each other and something has to give.
What I really love about this fic is that in addition to having a gripping plot, the characters of Rorschach/Walter and Daniel shine through. They're both innately broken from start to finish, but the two somehow they manage to keep moving on, partly by clinging to each other. On top of that, the build up of the relationship from friends to lovers is slow and thoughtful and exquisitely realistic.
Excerpt: “They’re asking for volunteers downtown. You know, digging out bodies, keeping an eye out for looters, that sort of thing. I was gonna go down there and help out.” Stupid, he knows, as soon as the words leave his mouth, stupid and pointless after they failed to save the world. Or failed to fail to save the world. Whichever one it was. But what else is left for them, now? There’s no room for heroes in Veidt’s utopia. Not their breed of hero, anyway. All they can do is clear away the rubble. “You, uh…”
Rorschach brushes past him, out the bathroom door and into the apartment that’s been their hiding place for the past few days. He stands by a window overlooking the deserted street. Light floods in from gaps in the planks of wood that they nailed to the windowsill.
“Will be another crime wave. Peace only lasts so long. Opportunities for criminals.”
The first part of Ordinary World: Hey Jupiter
The rest of the chapters of the story (as well as its sequels) are collected here.
