Pairing: Bill and Byron
Length: 624

Author Website: I couldn't find one. If anyone else from the fandom knows or the author sees this, please let me know.
Why this must be read: This is a somewhat short piece and I think that's part of what makes it's chilling atmosphere and charm. It feels final. It's a pretty disturbing fic, actually, but a total must for any Bill/Byron angst fan. It portrays Byron's insanity not only as one dangerous to himself, but also dangerous to others, even someone he loves, so it's very emotionally gripping.

Pairing: Bill/Byron
Length: 3500

Author Website: fic tag on their journal
Why this must be read: This fic is adorable and emotional, has the odd sprinkle of humour and transitions from slightly angsty to fluffy wonderfully. In which Byron wants Bill but doesn't want Bill to like him and Bill likes Byron anyway, is too damn nice, and puts up with Byron's boozing. Good characterisation is shown through Byron's cynical and messed up attitude and Bill's relentless acceptance. A must read for everyone who loves the pairing or who just wants to end up feeling good.

And we are back to another round of Crack Van with [ profile] rocks_not_dead who promises Minutemen recs, angst, and most likely booze.

Pairing: Bill/Byron
Length: 1200
Author on LJ: [ profile] tortoisegirl
Author Website: I couldn't find an author website, but there are a few fics on [ profile] strapsandstars and now we have tortoisegirl on AO3
Why this must be read: Now, personally, I already love this fic because it was one of the first I read in the fandom, from what I can remember. And for me it hit right where I wanted it. Byron. Post Bill. ANGST! This fic hurts and it hurts so good. The writing style sets a chilling atmosphere and it's a very creative take on Byron's road to insanity.

Pairing: Nite Owl/Rorschach
Length: 1979
Author on LJ: [ profile] steals_thyme
Author Website: Can't Shake This Limerence
Why this must be read:

In the grand tradition of sex pollen fics, this one sees Nite Owl having to deal with his partner who's just been dosed. The dialogue between them as Nite Owl tries to do the right thing and not let Rorschach do something he'll regret is both spot-on and hilarious, and this fic also offers a bonus chapter at the end of the original entry, so scroll down!

He grabbed Rorschach's arm, spinning him so that he could pull it roughly up behind his back. They stumbled, turning until Rorschach was the one flat against Archie, half-masked face pushed against the warmed metal by a hand on the back of his neck, pinned like a criminal. Dan knew he could break the hold with minimal effort, but instead he reached back with his free hand to fondle Dan's thigh.

"Hrn," he said, arching his back. "Yes, good. Like this. Keep the suit on, Nite Owl."

"Oh god!" Dan said, exasperated. "There is no way you're really that kinky, come on, man."

Characters: Walter Kovacs
Length: >2000
Author on LJ: [ profile] findmyantidrug
Author Website: Bleed Ink
Why this must be read:

By the time we meet Rorschach in "Watchmen", Walter Kovacs has effectively died and only the smallest glimpses of the man he used to be remain. We're left with a character who himself prefers only to be thought of as "Rorschach", though behind his idealized facade lies a man who had to slog his way through the worst aspects of poverty since childhood, fighting tooth and nail for his own integrity the whole way. This is a man worth knowing, and "Little Things" gives us an opportunity to walk with him for a bit.

Find has a way of spinning the most mundane details into tiny, brilliant observations of a character. Her stories are poignant and touching without over-sentimentalizing, and this is no exception. This story presents "three times that New York reached out to Walter, and one time he reached back."

Why this must be read:

This is a ghost story of the highest caliber, taking one of the classic ghost story tropes and turning it into an all-too-possible adventure in the Watchmen-verse. The characters are beautifully and poignantly written, and the story has just the right amount of creepiness to keep one wanting more.

I'm a sucker for fix-its, and for well-done humor. This little gem has both packed into one little drabble. Really, once you throw in alternate universes, anything can be fixed – and how often does one get the chance to hear Adrian Veidt say "God, I am such an idiot"?

Author Website: Watchmen Kinkmeme v. 5.0
Why this must be read:

Rorschach goes up against the Slenderman. (For anyone who doesn't understand the full horror/awesomeness of that, see here.)

Dan has never seen Rorschach gibber before. Sure, what they (Dan isn't even sure that's true, that he didn't just see shadows and Rorschach's terror) had seen had been weird, but weird is what masks do.

"Seen him before!" Rorschach nearly shrieks, after a solid ten minutes of meaningless sounds a prayer.

"When? Where?" Anything to get some sense out of him. Dan doesn't know if he's more afraid of his partner right now, or for him, but he grabs his shoulders to stop the pacing.

"Only a child." His voice has dropped to the tiny voice of a child, frightened of any sounds in the dark, even his own. "Saw him. And Daniel..." He clutches at Dan's arms, trembling all over. "He saw me."

Pairing: Dan / Rorschach
Length: >18K
Author on LJ: Anonymous (if the author has de-anoned, please tell me and I'll correct!)
Author Website: Watchmen Kinkmeme v. 5.0
Why this must be read:

This began with the prompt, "Walter gets arrested on a charge completely unrelated to his being Rorschach. What happens next?"

What happens is an adventure that begins with furtive, coded letters and mafia plots. It gives tantalizing glimpses of Rorschach having to cope far out of his comfort zone while Dan finds his all over again. It reveals the ways in which misunderstandings can steer history, writing can be the best way to communicate, and how the fragments of a partnership can be pieced back together.

I loved reading this fic as it was delivered chapter by chapter on the Kinkmeme, and I'm beyond excited that it's finally finished so I can share it here!

Characters: Silk Spectre II, Nite Owl, Rorschach
Length: ~1600
Author on LJ: Anonymous
Author Website: Watchmen Kinkmeme v. 5.0
Why this must be read:

Rorschach didn't take the Roche case; Laurie did.

This AU is as chilling as it is because it could have happened. It's very real, and inspires compelling questions. No punches are pulled here; not for the faint of heart.

"Rorschach surges ahead of him when they reach the abandoned dressmakers building, eager to kick the door in, and then pulls up short with a surprised noise. The door is already sprung and hanging open. It’s not as neat a job as Rorschach would have made of it; the door is bowed in the middle and it looks like whoever broke in did it by hurling themselves bodily into the door until it gave."

Pairing: Dan/Rorschach (and Dan/Walter, kind of)
Length: 2640

Why this must be read:

This is one of the best "beginning of the relationship" D/R fics I've read. It places us sometime after their relationship changes from partners to...? Dan isn't sure, and Rorschach isn't saying. Any "Watchmen" fan already knows that these two have issues in spades, and this fic incorporates a number of them into a funny and poignant story that shows a wonderfully real glimpse of two all-too-human characters.

Pairing: Nite Owl/Rorschach, hints of Ozymandias/Comedian and Jon/Laurie
Length: ~800 words
Author on LJ: anonymous contributor to the kinkmeme
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

Nite Owl and Rorschach are in a relationship when Nite Owl accidentally calls Rorschach "babe" in front of a group of people, including civilians. It's a short fic but the author managed to squeeze in lot of elements. The main Nite Owl/Rorschach plot is very sweet, and says a lot about their relationship in a little space. Seeing the Crimebusters getting along, teasing each other and cracking jokes is a lot of fun - and even some regular bystanders, a cop and a gangster, get in on the fun!

“I don’t know,” Adrian joined in, looking at her thoughtfully. “I’ve always enjoyed the simplicity of an endearment. Sugar, for instance.”

“Sweet like a cupcake,” Comedian added. “Sugar-cakes?”

“Sugar-britches, sugar-bun, sugar-lips, sugar-smacks,” Adrian rattled off.

Rorschach quivered faintly in a silent rage. “Told you never to call me that, Daniel.” He ground out.

Pairing: Nite Owl & Rorschach, with appearances from the rest of the Crimebusters
Length: ~2600 words
Author on LJ: [ profile] etherati
Author Website: Fic master post
Why this must be read:

Suspense! Bomb-diffusing techie Nite Owl! The Crimebusters working together as a team! Feelings in the face of imminent death! The setup is that the heroes are faced with a bomb and a ticking timer, and Nite Owl's the one who's going to try to disarm it. Part of the fic focuses on the group's response to the threat, and part on Nite Owl and Rorschach at the bomb site where they might die any second. The latter bits have some fantastic interaction between Nite Owl and Rorschach. It uses one of my favorite tropes, "I'm not leaving you, we'll die together if we have to", and executes it beautifully. It really plays up how much these two care about each other, both as crimefighting partners and as friends, and I can't get enough of it.

Dan registers, as he lets the breath out, that he isn’t dead. The snips are shaking violently in his hands, and the white wire is in two pieces, and the timer, of course, is still counting down. (So much for getting lucky on the first try.)

Then he glances up, and Rorschach is staring steadily back, and he realizes just how lucky he really was.

Hello! I'll be taking a second turn at reccing for Watchmen this month! Last time I recced I went through my list of favorites and pulled out ones that, for the most part, weren't too AU or too smutty and had a good range of characters & pairings. I...likely won't stick to those same guidelines this time, so expect AUs and kinkmeme fics and lots of Dan/Rorschach. Starting with this rec :D

Pairing: Nite Owl/Rorschach
Length: ~2200 words
Author on LJ: anonymous kinkmeme author
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

After being very badly injured Dan ends up with a full-body robotic makeover. Robo-Dan is awesome - the descriptions of his new self paint a very cool picture - but this fics takes a bittersweet look at the idea of a machine slowly taking the place of a person. It plays off the idea that Dan is Rorschach's only friend very well; Rorschach's desperation to keep his partner human is both tragic and touching. With a lovely side of robo-sex!

The friendly chatter stopped. The creative inventing stopped. Too often, he said and did exactly no more than was required. It had disturbed Rorschach, to see his partner go from passionate for their cause to a barely responsive observer. The thought of losing Nite Owl to the same dispassionate logic as Dr. Manhattan had grated. What was the point of him living, surviving, if the part that mattered withered away inside the shell? He had tried to explain that and they had ended up arguing.

Characters: Adrian, with cameos from the rest of the Crimebusters.
Length: Multi-chapter

Author Website: Author's fic journal.
Warnings: Violence, rape, gore, psychological horror.
Why this must be read: Since it's Halloween, I thought I'd finish off the month's recs in appropriately creepy style. This skilfully paced story makes the transition from spooky atmospherics to hellish brutality work very well, and there are plenty of scares along the way. The setting is also meshed very well with the Watchmen-verse: while the action takes place in Silent Hill, the demons by which Adrian is pursued are most definitely his own.

Why this must be read: This sparse, poetic little piece gets over so much about both characters in so few words. Why this must be read: This sharply written fic explores how things might have gone differently with the Minutemen had the Comedian been the Comedienne. Edie Blake is horribly ill-at-ease with herself and her desires, but here it's also very possible to sympathise with her. The story is both sensual and awkward, and captures that agonising adolescent longing very well.

Characters: Adrian, Death
Length: ~1000

Why this must be read: This is part of the author's excellent "Death Through the Fandoms" series, and it's a smart, beautifully written little fic in which Death pays Adrian a visit after Dan and Laurie have left Karnak, and offers him a choice. Both of their voices are spot on, and it's funny as well as intriguing and affecting,

Why this must be read: First off, a warning: this fic is about AIDS, and really pulls no punches. There's character death, and it hurts. That said, that's also why you should read it. It's wrenching, and tender without being schmoopy or sentimental, and the simple, straightforward prose style just makes it all the more affecting. Plus, it manages to make the sort of behaviour I'd normally consider totally OOC for Adrian appear perfectly convincing, which is always a sign that the author is Doing It Right.

Why this must be read: Because it's a gorgeous, bittersweet little snippet that packs a real emotional punch in very few words. The disconnect between Adrian's unrequited feelings for and idealisation of Dan, and the fact that he's actually kind of a dick to the lovers he has, comes across very well here, I think. Plus, Dan's presence and character are put across beautifully, despite his barely appearing in the story.

Author Website: Watchmen kinkmeme, 3rd installment
Why this must be read:

This fic is one of a few that take the idea of Daemons from the "His Dark Materials" universe and applies it to the Watchmen verse. The result is a very short fic that nonetheless gives us what is imho one of the most profound and touching insights into Eddie Blake's character. Also, the imagery used is simply amazing, so it's worth a read just for the writing style, too.

Watchmen fanfic, like its canon, is full of serious business and angst. This fic, though, is one of the most beautiful examples of adorable fluff, and who doesn't love fluff? Especially if it involves Bill and Byron, who are pretty much the fandom's go-to happy couple.

Why this must be read:

This is a wonderfully atmospheric fic that plays on a quote by Robert Louis Stevenson - "The body is a house of many windows: there we all sit, showing ourselves and crying on the passers-by to come and love us".

I'm very fond of the characterization of both Adrian and Eddie in this one, and the way it shows an important parallel between the two men, both of them being in their own way removed from and unable to connect with the rest of society.

Last but not least, it has some delicious sexual tension that is not quite resolved.

Author Website: Watchmen kinkmeme, round 5
Why this must be read:

One of the things I love about the Watchmen kinkmeme is that it's not only a good place to find porn, but also everything else, from gen to crack.

In this short story, Doctor Manhattan buys a twinkie. The premise is silly, but the fill is amazing - where the GN explored the idea of how the world of global politics might change if there really were a superhuman being around, this story explores how it might feel for the guy on the street to suddenly be confronted with that superhuman being. Buying a twinkie.

It's both insightful and really funny, so if you have 5 minutes to spare, read it.

Hello! I'm [ profile] fireez, and I will be having the pleasure to rec some of my favorite Watchmen fics this month. To start things off, have a taste of my favorite pairing!

Pairing: Adrian Veidt/Edward Blake (aka Ozymandias/The Comedian)
Length: ~17k
Author on LJ: [ profile] chaumiamor
Author Website: Fic tag
Why this must be read:

Because it's hot.

But apart from that, it also does a very good job of portraying the characters. Both the Comedian and Ozymandias are men with Issues with a capital "I", and that part is not glossed over in this fic. Rather, those issues are woven into the story in a way that makes it very believable.

Also, the fic plays on a theme that for me, and many other fans of this pairing, is central to its appeal. Adrian and Eddie don't like each other very much. They're not lovers, not even friends, which makes for delicious not-quite-hatesex.
