Mother Tongue by Anna S. (PG)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: Scorpius/Sikozu. Well, probably heading in that direction.

Why this must be read:
Actually, this is more or less covered in the fandom overview, but I'll recap a little.
Sikozu was a late addition to the Farscape cast, who didn't turn up on Moya until Season Four. She belongs to a species called the Kalish, who are servants of the Scarrans. (One of the armies of Big Bads who chase John Crichton around the galaxy.) One of the first things she does upon arriving in the cast is become Scorpius's love interest as they bond over their mutual dislike of Scarrans.
Because it was written early on in Season Four, this story doesn't take into account the things that were revealled about Sikozu later, but it's no less worth reading for having been slightly jossed later on.
The Kalish have all kinds of nifty abilities - they can walk up walls, reattach severed limbs and only need to eat a few times a year. However, their brains are unable to tolerate translator microbes the plot devi ... er, I mean nifty creatures that allow people in the Farscape universe to understand one another even though they all speak different languages. As a result, they have to learn the language of every species they encounter, something they seem able to do remarkably quickly.
Written for the Defining Moments challenge, this deceptively brief ficlet describes a moment where Scorpius teaches Sikozu something she doesn't know about Scarrans. What I love most about this is the way Anna S. uses Sikozu's unique knowledge and awareness of language to illuminate her reaction to the rest of the characters and shape her response to the information Scorpius provides. She manages to pack a whole lot of insight into five hundred words or so.
If Crichton could see it, he would call it a rainbow, but then if Crichton could see it, maybe she wouldn't have to.
