seeing me like this by prudence dearly, rated PG

Why this must be read: As much as I love first-time fic, I also *love* established relationship fic. And I have a huge soft spot in my heart for protective!Rays, whre they are so fierce about protecting and taking care of each other. But the thing that makes this fic is the end--trust me, I went from going O_O through the whole thing into exploding into wee Sionn!bits, entirely composed of hearts. You will, too, trust me :)
Enjoy!
Ray took a breath. “This is not a holiday,” he said. “This is work. And Vegas is not a fun place for me.”
“No shit,” Kowalski shot back. “I don’t wanna go for the slots, Vecchio. I know what going back there means and I don’t want you going alone.”
Ray tried not to wince at those words. Kowalski knew what Vegas had done to him; one way and another Kowalski had seen the scars, in and out, had been there when the nightmares woke him up. It had eased, eventually. It had been a long time since Ray had felt the Bookman’s instincts trying to take over, since he’d felt Vegas seeping out through his skin. It made him want to shower in scalding water. It made him want to scrub at his eyes with his fists until he knew the cold, hard stare was gone and he could look himself in the mirror again. Or he could look at Kowalski again and not be ashamed.
There was no time for that now. Right now, he had to go to Vegas, where everything would be familiar, where the old names and places would be dug up again, where he’d be looking over his shoulder, just like old times. He could already feel it all boiling up towards the surface. There was only one way he knew how to be in Vegas. No way was Kowalski seeing him like that.
“I told you I don’t want you to come,” said Ray. “It’s just a trip, anyway. It’s no big deal.”
