"The Tea in China" by cadhla (PG)

*HR fumbles around in pockets looking for van key* Sorry, sorry I'm late...

Fair warning, I am one of the "new school" Doctor Who fans so the stories that I'll be reccing this month will most likely be those of the Ninth and Tenth Doctor. Also, yes, I am one of those that does indeed 'ship the Doctor with Rose, and though I do not intend to have my recs be just that, I thought I'd warn you that some may be along those lines. Anyhoo...

Why this must be read:

This fic is simply perfect; seriously. It is a lovely example of how science fiction, and Doctor Who in particular, can examine and illuminate very profound things through the use of mundane situations. The author is spot on when it comes to the characterizations of both Rose and the Tenth Doctor, and the writing is excellent as well, very intelligent and thought provoking.

Rose eyed him. “Well, what? It’s only a million degrees here. We’re going to be steamed alive.”

“What? No!” Shaking his head in an exaggerated sort of ‘well, that’s just silly’, the Doctor licked his finger and held it up, testing the air. “There’s a lovely breeze coming off the rice fields, that should cool things down a bit, and what with it being past noon, it can’t be more than, oh, half a million degrees. At the most.”

She couldn’t help it. Despite the heat -- she could feel her hair wilting -- Rose giggled. “All right, half a million. Where are we?”

“Where you asked to go!” the Doctor said, still grinning like the star of a live-action Punch and Judy. Spreading his arms wide, he declared, “China!”
