Why this must be read:
Part one is amusing and long, and the original characters are very appealing. The art adds to the effect nicely, and I know you'll enjoy it. Part 2 is bittersweet, and if you don't want to deal with mention of character death, you can skip it. If you want to go there, you'll find some of the family saga to be sad, albeit satisfying overall.

My rules (YMMV): up to 2000 = short; from 2000 - 5000 = medium; and over 5000 = long. If it's 20,000 - 40,000 or more, I call that a novella, and more than that, a novel.

I dunno--I know it varies from person to person. Personally, the longer the better, if the story is good. But in this fandom, there are not that many really long ones. Some long, many-parted series, maybe, but not so many novels.

See, this is how you can tell I've been out of the DCU fandom for so long. Supernatural spoils me to the point where I think 10k is medium and 20k is semi-long.
