Why this must be read: Gen fics come in many flavors including angst, humor, case/action, AU and even the flavor some call, “slice of life”, which highlights friendship outside of 'foxhole' scenarios usually set as the basis for strong bonds between males. We know that the commercial pressures of screenplays often lead to key interactions in 'bridge' scenes being removed from episodes. This leaves the kind of holes in canon relationships which can only be filled in fanon. In this week's recc, a team of classic authors arrived at that balance of elements which
strongly addressed those canon conflicts. Dawn C and Kim Heggen co-authored “Hallowed Halls”, a Faux Paws Virtual Episode.
This unusual collaboration between a lawyer and a pediatrician (see their interviews at the Cascade Library) embraced the task of presenting Blair's reluctant acceptance of a police badge with the same enthusiasm seen in their solo writing efforts. Together they arrived at three dimensional characters able to articulate the basic conflict an observer of society would encounter when taking on a position of control over society:
“I'm doing this because I want to be out there with you fighting bad guys and, more than anything, I want to make sure nothing happens to you." He glanced over his shoulder and lowered his voice, then leaned a fraction closer to Jim. "You're still a sentinel and you still need someone to watch your back... Right?"
They also allowed us to see a Jim capable of wondering whether his role in society was worth the deconstruction of a friend who sacrificed his own work in order to set the phoenix free from its pyre.
"Let me finish, please." When Blair finally nodded mutely, Jim continued. "You owe me nothing. You have to decide, Chief... you have to ask yourself the question: What's best for Blair Sandburg? Not, what's best for Jim Ellison?"
"I was hoping," Blair whispered, "that they were the same thing." He leaned his forehead against Jim's shoulder, a portrait of agonized indecision.
The various 'Virtual Seasons' stories should certainly be read by newcomers to TS fanfic where canon is fleshed out in fulfilling style, even for those who have not seen the actual show.
Who knows? These additions to canon lore may spur long-time readers to re-condition those stories you've been writing all along and post a few as new authors!
