Why this must be read: Because sometimes you just need some damn good romance to counteract all the angst in this fandom. Unabashedly shippy yet remaining true to both characters (plus a brilliant cameo by Colonel Sink), Cricket explores the development of Winters & Nixon's relationship from first meeting through the end of "Points", with emphasis on the last few parts of the miniseries.
“You’re a gambling man, though,” said Nixon.
That earned Nixon a raised eyebrow, though Something-Like-Wingate still didn’t turn to face him. “How do you figure?” he asked.
“Well,” said Nixon reasonably, “you’re sitting out here in the middle of the night. If you’re caught, you’ll probably be kicked out of OCS and sent back into the regular infantry, and there goes your military career. As an officer, anyhow.”
The other man thought about this, his eyes still fixed on some distant point. At long last, he shrugged, and nodded, almost absently. “Yes, that seems to be a pretty accurate assessment of what will happen to us if we’re caught.”
“Look,” said Nixon, “I know why I’m out here. Why the hell are you out here?”
And this time the man did turn to face him. His blue-green eyes, which were pale in the daylight, seemed eerily almost translucent in the dark.
“I’m out here because you’re out here,” he said quietly. “And if you can’t trust me to stand by you when the risks are relatively low, why should you trust me when we’re in combat together?”
