Why this must be read:
A couple of weeks ago, I recced
fiandyfic’s The Hookerverse here on the
crack_van.
This story is a great example of what sometimes happens in fanon, if you’re very lucky, when one story/a series of stories inspires another writer to produce a great story as well. Here, Jamie imagines what happened to Sam after the end of the events depicted in the Hookerverse.
As I commented at the time: OMFG! The Evil Twins spawned a love child! I don't want to see it ending this way exactly, but damn it you make me believe and that makes me miserable... and really happy all at the same time. Such a lovely piece of writing about a not terribly lovely life.
Excerpt: He knows this, knows it backwards. How many times had he heard the lectures, gone to the conferences, studied the literature? Under the banner of 'Breaking the Cycle – The Rehabilitation of Sex Industry Survivors,' they'd brought in a real live former prostitute to lecture them back in ‘98 and Sam had spent most of the session staring at her unfortunate gut and wondering if it counted as rehabilitation if you just weren't attracting punters anymore.

That sums up this story perfectly, and is a beautiful reflection of a beautiful piece of work. Despite the sucess of Sam moving on his life, reading this always makes me cry. Great rec, Drayce -- I'm glad someone finally got to it. I had wanted to rec it but no one had recced Hookerverse yet, and that was a prereq for me.
Damn, but this fic hurts so good!

It's a beautiful piece of writing which of course just makes it hit home all the harder.
Well I couldn't believe the Hookerverse hadn't been recced either and I knew as soon as I did it that I'd in all probability rec Jamie's story too. It's funny because Andy mentioned it to me after I recced the HV and it was already on my list. *g*

I was absolutely gobsmacked when Jamie produced Let My Oars - it's absolutely gorgeous and gritty and real. I adore the way it's written - she has such a lyrical style. Fi and I said at the time it was such an absolute honour to have such a fic written on the back of our little 'verse.
