Fandom Overview: Glee
Hi, everyone! I'm driving the van for up-and-coming fandom Glee this month, and I thought I'd kick us into gear with a little overview of the fandom. I'm sorry this is late, it's just that this is one fandom that has a lot to cover (Phew...). Now let's get started!
Basically, Glee is amazing. It has me laughing and tearing up every single episode and the musical numbers are catchy as hell. I dare you not to find at least one character you'll fall completely in love with or see yourself in - I love them all. The show is so real, it deals with a lot of the problems we're all faced with and it does so with humor and grace.
Glee first aired its pilot episode in May 2009 and then returned in September the same year with weekly episodes. It’s created by Ryan Murphy (the man behind the hit series Nip/Tuck), Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan as an edgier show about high school – riding on the wave of such phenomenons as High School Musical and American Idol, it's been described by Murphy as a "post-modern musical".
Glee gained immediate popularity among its viewers. It was nominated for three 2009 Teen Choice awards and received the Diversity Award November 2009.

PREMISE
“By its very definition, Glee is about opening yourself up to joy.”
Set in Lima, Ohio, and focusing on the McKinley high school’s show choir (also known as the “glee club”) Glee revolves around a cast of teenage and adult characters that are based on stereotypes but have surprising depths. While at the same time being an escapist and uplifting series it deals with fairly difficult issues, such as bullying, teen pregnancy, disabilities and sexuality.
The main plot in the first 13 episodes revolves around the glee club's rise to success as they work towards the sectionals. We're given insight into the high school cast system -- who are the popular kids and who are the underdogs -- not just among the students, but also among the teachers, and are invited to watch as, thanks to the glee club, those lines are blurred.
MAIN CHARACTERS
Glee has so many characters! There's so much to love. And every character is interesting and deep, even the ones you thought for sure you'd hate you come to understand in the end. I can't even express how much I adore this show ♥
Adult Cast
Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison)
Will is the cute and earnest Spanish teacher at McKinley who dreams of the time when he himself was a student and member of the school’s then very successful and popular glee club. When the position as teacher for the glee club becomes available he takes the job, even when he has to pay out of his own pocket to keep it going. He renames the club “New Directions” and struggles to get it back to its former glory.
In the episode “Acafellas” he also starts an a cappella boy band to fulfill his dream of performing (making the ladies swooooon). Luckily he quickly returns to the glee club, where he's needed to handle all sorts of problems from choreography to handsome jocks needing a shoulder to cry on.
He has a struggling marriage with his high school sweetheart, Terri, whom he believes is pregnant and for his family’s sake his often looking for ways to make a better living. Will also has romantic tension with Emma, although they’ve never gone further than lingering looks and very intense nose touching (I kid you not!). His biggest challenges in the first 13 episodes are getting enough members in the club and making sure they’re good enough to win sectionals, all the while dealing with the complications and obstacles that pop up along the way.
Will's also notorious for his curls (which may or may not be home perm), a good cause for instant distrust from Sue if she's ever heard of any.
Will Quote: "I have a Spanish quiz in which one of your cheerleaders misspelled her name, and answered every question with a drawing of a sombrero!"
Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch)
Sue’s pure evil and she knows it. Coach for the Cheerios (the cheerleader squad) and pretty much a winner at almost everything she does, Sue demands the best of the best, from the copy machine that can be used solely for the cheerleading team’s benefit to European dry cleaning services and Cheerios whose performances are impeccable. When the Glee club starts moving in on her turf, she sets out to destroy it.
She does also has some softer sides and vulnerability. Her sister, whom she loves, and her own spot on TV that she may lose if she can't win the national championship (Sue's Corner). Since three of her top cheerleaders have become members of Glee and can end up changing priorities, this means that that the club and Schuester are an even bigger threat to her goals.
Sue's the character that is so mean and horrible and vindictive that we have to love her - if only because she has the best come backs ever and the way Jane Lynch delivers her lines is jaw droppingly awesome.
Sue Quote: ''I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat. I will let you fall in love with that kitty cat. And then on some dark, cold night, I will steal away into your house - and punch you in the face.''
Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays)
The school's mysophobic guidance counselor who has a serious crush on Will. She does her best to give advice to everyone who needs it and help the Glee Club along, but she has trouble dealing with her own mental illness and loneliness. After a confrontation with Will’s wife, she accepts a wedding proposal from Ken Tanaka – the football coach – as long as she can keep her last name, they’ll live on separate sides of town and won’t see each other outside of school. That doesn't stop her and Will from trading longing looks across hallways, though.
The best thing about her is that even though she really hates germs and she's hopelessly in love with a married man, she's still a voice of reason. And Emma is just unbearably cute. In fact, she's so adorable there's even a blog dedicated to her clothes: What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear?
Emma Quote: ”But provide what exactly? The understanding that money is the most important thing? Or the idea that the only life worth living is one you're truly passionate about, Will?”
Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig)
Will’s wife. She used to be a cheerleader when Will was the Glee club star. She’s intense and loves Will in her own way, but she’s very self-centered and demanding. Terri is always pushing for Will to be more than a teacher so they can have a better income and, by her definition, a better life.
When she discovers that her pregnancy is only hysterical, she can’t make herself tell Will and instead starts to spin a web of lies involving a fake stomach and convincing Quinn, the pregnant cheerleader and gleek, to let her adopt her baby. She’s viciously jealous of Emma and not very understanding of Will’s dreams to be a teacher and a performer. She gets a lot of bad advice from her sister, Kendra.
Terri Quote: ”But Will, I'm on my feet four hours a day, three times a week here. Now I have to go home and cook dinner for myself?”

Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley)
Mercedes is really outspoken, fashion-conscious and a diva to boot. She had a brief crush on Kurt, got really mad at him when he rejected her. They made up and Kurt told her he was gay, and since then they've been best friends. She's also really friendly with Tina - they make these incredibly cute phone calls to each other even when they're in the same building. And her dad's a dentist.
Sue nickname: "Aretha"
Mercedes Quote: "Oh, HELL to the no! Look, I'm not down with this background singin' nonsense. I'm Beyoncé, I ain't no Kelly Rowland."
Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer)
Kurt is the fierce young boy with a passion for designer clothes (and with a face "like an 11 year old milkmaid" - Emma ♥) who gets bullied a lot by the jocks. That doesn't mean he's anything but poised and unafraid, he even ends up joining the football team to impress his dad and saves the team from losing a game. He really perfects that "better than you" tough look, even though he's going to a real hard time and tries to deal with admitting to a few people that he's gay. He's never been kissed and wants to wait until it's something special - perhaps even with Finn, 'cause he's had feelings for him for years.
Kurt loves music and is definitely willing to wrest the spotlight from Rachel if he can. There's a case where they're competing for the lead in Defying Gravity (traditionally sung by a girl) and Kurt could have made it, but he steps down when he sees that the negative attention he gets for being who he is will only get worse if he does. The harassment wouldn't bother him, but he can see that it gets to his dad, Burt.
His mom died when he was young and his father is all he has.
Sue nickname: "Gay Kid"
Kurt Quote: "I love you more than I love being a star."
Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale)
Artie's been paralyzed from the waist down (but, he wants to make clear, he still has a fully functioning penis) since he was in a car accident when he was eight. He's really good at dancing with his wheelchair, he plays the guitar and he's a spectacular singer. He just wants to be one of the gleeks and have the same experiences as them, but it's harder for him. Because of his own disability he was really upset when he found out Tina was faking hers.
Sue nickname: "Wheels"
Artie Quote: "We're planning on smacking them down like the hand of God."
Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz)
Tina is a goth who's really shy and has been pretending to have a stutter since sixth grade, but after joining Glee she's realized that she doesn't want to drive people away anymore. She likes Artie a lot, but he didn't want to be with her after she confessed to him that she's been faking it.
Sue nickname: "Asian"
Tina Quote: "We're d-d-doomed."
Rachel Berry (Lea Michele)
Rachel has a voice sent from heaven, but unfortunately a personality that is, well, grating at times. She knows she's going to be a successful star and works on every part of her life so she can stay on the track to stardom. She's not willing to give up her place in the spotlight for anyone else, not even fellow gleeks. Part of this may have been inspired by her gay dads (Jewish and black respectively) who have always encouraged her ambition.
It doesn't mean she's not caring or that she holds grudges - she's helped and forgiven both Puck and Quinn for bullying her and accepts them as full on gleeks. She cares a lot for Finn, who's her main crush. Other (passing) crushes are Mr. Schuester and Puck. But of all the gleeks, she's probably (as of yet) the only one who hasn't made any real friendships with the rest of the gang. Finn likes her a lot, but the situation's complicated.
Rachel Quote: "You may laugh because every time I sign my name I put a gold star after it. But it's a metaphor, and metaphors are important. My gold stars are a metaphor for me being a star."
Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith)
The star quarterback who loves to sing and drum - he's usually the male lead in the club. Finn's a really nice guy, the kind you can bring home to meet your parents, and he tries to get everyone else to be nice to each other. He struggles to deal with all the pressure in his life, from school to football to glee and to his mom (his dad was a soldier who died in the line of duty). He has a gift with getting his way when it comes to school - one time Coach Tanaka tries to make him and the rest of the jock gleeks choose between Glee or football, but Finn manages to convince him to let them do both.
Finn really doesn't want to be stuck in Lima for the rest of his life and he has his hopes set on a scholarship so he can go to college. That hope is pretty much dashed when his girlfriend Quinn becomes pregnant, even though they've never had sex (there's an explanation with a bath tub and premature ejaculation here, which, yeah... I never said Finn was smart). Even though he's scared to become a father, he really cares about his unborn daughter.
Dakota nickname: "Frankenteen"
Finn Quote: "The guys said if I took the Glee club photo, they'd make me choose between a Hitler mustache and buck teeth. And I can't rock either of those looks."
Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron)
Quinn was the head Cheerio who joined Glee to keep an eye on her boyfriend (Finn) and spy on/sabotage the club for Sue, but after the news of her pregnancy got around she was kicked out of the Cheerios. She's starting to become more and more attached to everyone in the club and has expressed pride in being a member of it.
Quinn is a devout Christian and (used to be) president of the Celibacy club. She slept with Puck once (blaming it on alcohol and low self-esteem, although Finn and Rachel flirting probably helped too) and doesn't want to admit he's the father of her baby. Still, she has feelings for him and keeps wavering between him and Finn- and whether she's giving the baby to Terri or keeping her.
When Finn tells Quinn's parents that she's pregnant, they throw her out of her home. Finn's mom takes her in.
It's also mentioned that she has an older sister.
Quinn Quote: "What I need right now, even more than looser pants, is acceptance."
Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera)
A Cheerio who joined Glee when Quinn did. She can be ruthlessly mean and bitchy. Used to date Puck and still stakes her claim on him, but she's also seen being close to Matt and Brittany, so who knows?
Santana Quote: "My sexts are too hot to erase."
Brittany (Heather Morris)
A Dutch-American Cheerio. She joined Glee with Santana and Quinn, and still spies (badly) on the club for Coach Sylvester. Even though Brittany's really not the sharpest knife in the drawer and takes part in bullying others (such as defacing yearbook pictures), she's sweet and lovely and won't let other people's opinions influence who she's friends with.
Brittany Quote: "I find recipes confusing."
Noah “Puck” Puckerman (Mark Salling)
The hottest of the hot, sex on two legs etc. Fits the stereotype of the dumb jock who's a bully with only sex on his mind, but after joining Glee and facing ridicule for it he's starting to grow up. He mostly prefers sexing up the hot moms he meets through his pool cleaning business (or through the Acafellas), although he'll basically flirt with just about anyone - there's even a scene where he comes half-naked out of the showers with April and Matt! He's perfect as the fandom's "little black dress" ^_^
Puck's best friends with Finn, but slept with Quinn anyway and got her pregnant. He really wants to be there for their baby and have a family with Quinn, but he doesn't want to stop being himself, i.e. having sex with everything that moves. He used to date Santana, who dumped him because of his bad credit score, and now they're back to flirting with each other.
He lives with his mother and little sister. For his mother's sake he tries to be a good Jewish boy, so he dates Rachel (who's a nice Jewish girl) for a little while. We never see his dad, but Puck mentions him as being a deadbeat and someone he doesn't want to emulate.
He, like the rest, has ambition to be something more than just a Lima loser. When push comes to shove he chooses Glee over football. Not one of those who usually gets to be the lead singer, although he did blow everyone's minds when he sang Sweet Caroline. He also plays the guitar.
Puck Quote: "I love the days when I don’t wear underwear. Full commando."
Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.)
Joined Glee with Puck and Matt after Will helped the football team. He's an incredible dancer, especially when it comes to pop-and-lock. He chooses Glee over football, but got to stay on the team after Finn talked to the coach.
Sue nickname: "Other Asian"
Mike Quote: "I can pop and lock"
Matt Rutherford (Dijon Talton)
Joined Glee with Puck and Mike. Matt too chose Glee over football. He has some fine dance moves. AND he got himself some April Rhodes in the showers with Puck.
Sue nickname: "Shaft"
Matt Quote: ...I'm not sure Matt's had a line yet.
OTHER CHARACTERS
Ken Tanaka (Patrick Gallagher)
Ken is the coach with the creepily short shorts for Lima High’s football team, and he is very much in love with Emma, despite being aware of both her quirks and her infatuation with Will. After talking to Terri, who plays on his inferiority complex, he proposes to Emma. While to begin with not averse to letting Will try to recruit members from his team, he later tries to make the jocks choose between Glee and football.
At one point he’s also a member of the Acafellas.
Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba)
Struggles to turn every penny into a pound and even though he enjoys the glee clubs performances, he's still often one of the many things standing in their way, mostly because Sue uses him to get her way or because he can't afford to give them any money. There are still times when he helps the club out, such as when he cuts the Cheerios dry cleaning budget back for the gleeks' benefit. He's a stickler for keeping the school out of trouble.
Burt Hummel (Mike O'Malley)
Kurt's very supportive blue-collar dad. He owns an auto shop and has taught Kurt a lot about cars. He finds it a bit difficult dealing with his son's more flamboyant sides and isn't quite ready to talk about boys with him yet, but he's getting there and if one thing's for certain it's that Burt won't let anyone treat Kurt differently just because he is who he is. Burt mostly wishes Kurt's mom were there to help them. He still hasn't packed her things away.
"I've known since you were three. All you wanted for your birthday was a pair of sensible heels. I guess I'm not totally in love with the idea, but, if that's who you are, there's nothing I can do about it. And I love you just as much. Ok?"
April Rhodes (Kristin Chenoweth)
An alcoholic and a member of the Glee Club when Will was a student. She never graduated and Will convinces her to return to school and the club to help them out and she spends some time corrupting the kids and doing pretty well for herself, until she decides that her time in the spotlight is over and leaves.
Sandy Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky)
Former director of the Glee Club. Very creepy. Joined forces with Sue at one point so they could bring Will down. Also sells medical marihuana after he lost his job.
Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman)
The school reporter with a crush on Rachel. He has a blog where he posts just about every piece of gossip he can get his hands on... He's sort of like a straight teenage Perez Hilton. He's very paparazzi.
Kendra Giardi (Jennifer Aspen)
Terri's sister. She has a husband, Phil, whom she controls with a steel fist and triplet sons who run wild. IMHO she gives the worst advice ever, convincing Terri that it's a good idea to continue the subterfuge and keep on fooling Will.
Carole Hudson (Romy Rosemont)
Finn's mom. Finn thinks it's been hard on her being a single mom since his dad died. She's very upset when she finds out Quinn's pregnant, but she's there to support them both.
Howard Bamboo (Kent Avenido)
A dyslexic who works at Sheets and Things with Terri. He has a tendency to get pulled into her smaller schemes. At one point he joined Acafellas, but he left before their big performance.
Rod Remington (Bill A. Jones)
Local news caster who has a brief flirt with Sue before she discovers his nonmonogamous ways. Loves to swing, both when it comes to relationships and when it comes to dance.
Andrea Carmichael (Earlene Davis)
Rod's colleague and sometimes lover.
Dr. Wu (Kenneth Choi)
Quinn and Terri's "baby doctor". He gets blackmailed into showing Will Quinn's ultrasound tape when he and Terri comes in for a session.
Russell Fabray (Gregg Henry)
Quinn's very religious and strict father. He's not so happy when his baby girl can't live up to his standards.
Judy Fabray (Charlotte Russ)
Quinn's mother. She'd rather ignore that something's wrong than make a scene.
Brad the Piano Guy (Brad Ellis)
Always there to play whatever score you need and to provide eye rolling when appropriate ♥
The McKinley High Jazz Band
Recruited by Artie to help the glee club, they're ready to provide the music to just about anything.
Grace Hitchens (Eve)
Director of the glee club at a correctional facility school for girls. Just want to teach her kids about doing things the right way, which is why it's bad when Sue offers her a chance to cheat at sectionals.
Dalton Rumba (Michael Hitchcock)
Director of the glee club at a school for deaf children. Lost his hearing on one ear as a child. Sue also gives his club the opportunity to cheat.
Dakota Stanley (Whit Hertford)
Star show choir choreographer with unrealistic expectations. He does the choreography for Vocal Adrenaline, one of the rival clubs the gleeks will meet at regionals. New Directions hire him once, but fire him again when they get to experience first hand how horrible he is.
Dave Karofsky (Max Adler)
A jock who loves being able to bully the former golden kids of McKinley High. If he gets a chance to slushee Finn, Quinn or Puck he takes it.
Jean Sylvester (Robin Trocki)
Sue's sister. She has Downs and lives in a home. Her favorite story is Little Red Riding Hood.
Suzy Pepper (Sarah Drew)
Student who had a fixation on Will. She commited self-harm by pepper when he spurned her advances, but happily therapy has done a lot of good for her now.
Josh Groban (Josh Groban)
As himself. He stops by to tell Sandy to stop stalking him. And to flirt with Will's mom.
Will's Mom (Debra Monk)
She's a drunk, but a fun drunk.
Will's dad (Victor Garber)
Inspired by Will's courage he decides to follow a dream of his own and join law school.
Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter)
A student with Downs Syndrome. She's really good friends with Brittany and she joins the Cheerios. She's awesome.

In the episode “Acafellas” he also starts an a cappella boy band to fulfill his dream of performing (making the ladies swooooon). Luckily he quickly returns to the glee club, where he's needed to handle all sorts of problems from choreography to handsome jocks needing a shoulder to cry on.
He has a struggling marriage with his high school sweetheart, Terri, whom he believes is pregnant and for his family’s sake his often looking for ways to make a better living. Will also has romantic tension with Emma, although they’ve never gone further than lingering looks and very intense nose touching (I kid you not!). His biggest challenges in the first 13 episodes are getting enough members in the club and making sure they’re good enough to win sectionals, all the while dealing with the complications and obstacles that pop up along the way.
Will's also notorious for his curls (which may or may not be home perm), a good cause for instant distrust from Sue if she's ever heard of any.
Will Quote: "I have a Spanish quiz in which one of your cheerleaders misspelled her name, and answered every question with a drawing of a sombrero!"
Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch)
Sue’s pure evil and she knows it. Coach for the Cheerios (the cheerleader squad) and pretty much a winner at almost everything she does, Sue demands the best of the best, from the copy machine that can be used solely for the cheerleading team’s benefit to European dry cleaning services and Cheerios whose performances are impeccable. When the Glee club starts moving in on her turf, she sets out to destroy it.
She does also has some softer sides and vulnerability. Her sister, whom she loves, and her own spot on TV that she may lose if she can't win the national championship (Sue's Corner). Since three of her top cheerleaders have become members of Glee and can end up changing priorities, this means that that the club and Schuester are an even bigger threat to her goals.
Sue's the character that is so mean and horrible and vindictive that we have to love her - if only because she has the best come backs ever and the way Jane Lynch delivers her lines is jaw droppingly awesome.
Sue Quote: ''I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat. I will let you fall in love with that kitty cat. And then on some dark, cold night, I will steal away into your house - and punch you in the face.''
Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays)
The school's mysophobic guidance counselor who has a serious crush on Will. She does her best to give advice to everyone who needs it and help the Glee Club along, but she has trouble dealing with her own mental illness and loneliness. After a confrontation with Will’s wife, she accepts a wedding proposal from Ken Tanaka – the football coach – as long as she can keep her last name, they’ll live on separate sides of town and won’t see each other outside of school. That doesn't stop her and Will from trading longing looks across hallways, though.
The best thing about her is that even though she really hates germs and she's hopelessly in love with a married man, she's still a voice of reason. And Emma is just unbearably cute. In fact, she's so adorable there's even a blog dedicated to her clothes: What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear?
Emma Quote: ”But provide what exactly? The understanding that money is the most important thing? Or the idea that the only life worth living is one you're truly passionate about, Will?”
Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig)
Will’s wife. She used to be a cheerleader when Will was the Glee club star. She’s intense and loves Will in her own way, but she’s very self-centered and demanding. Terri is always pushing for Will to be more than a teacher so they can have a better income and, by her definition, a better life.
When she discovers that her pregnancy is only hysterical, she can’t make herself tell Will and instead starts to spin a web of lies involving a fake stomach and convincing Quinn, the pregnant cheerleader and gleek, to let her adopt her baby. She’s viciously jealous of Emma and not very understanding of Will’s dreams to be a teacher and a performer. She gets a lot of bad advice from her sister, Kendra.
Terri Quote: ”But Will, I'm on my feet four hours a day, three times a week here. Now I have to go home and cook dinner for myself?”

Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley)
Mercedes is really outspoken, fashion-conscious and a diva to boot. She had a brief crush on Kurt, got really mad at him when he rejected her. They made up and Kurt told her he was gay, and since then they've been best friends. She's also really friendly with Tina - they make these incredibly cute phone calls to each other even when they're in the same building. And her dad's a dentist.
Sue nickname: "Aretha"
Mercedes Quote: "Oh, HELL to the no! Look, I'm not down with this background singin' nonsense. I'm Beyoncé, I ain't no Kelly Rowland."
Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer)
Kurt is the fierce young boy with a passion for designer clothes (and with a face "like an 11 year old milkmaid" - Emma ♥) who gets bullied a lot by the jocks. That doesn't mean he's anything but poised and unafraid, he even ends up joining the football team to impress his dad and saves the team from losing a game. He really perfects that "better than you" tough look, even though he's going to a real hard time and tries to deal with admitting to a few people that he's gay. He's never been kissed and wants to wait until it's something special - perhaps even with Finn, 'cause he's had feelings for him for years.
Kurt loves music and is definitely willing to wrest the spotlight from Rachel if he can. There's a case where they're competing for the lead in Defying Gravity (traditionally sung by a girl) and Kurt could have made it, but he steps down when he sees that the negative attention he gets for being who he is will only get worse if he does. The harassment wouldn't bother him, but he can see that it gets to his dad, Burt.
His mom died when he was young and his father is all he has.
Sue nickname: "Gay Kid"

Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale)
Artie's been paralyzed from the waist down (but, he wants to make clear, he still has a fully functioning penis) since he was in a car accident when he was eight. He's really good at dancing with his wheelchair, he plays the guitar and he's a spectacular singer. He just wants to be one of the gleeks and have the same experiences as them, but it's harder for him. Because of his own disability he was really upset when he found out Tina was faking hers.
Sue nickname: "Wheels"
Artie Quote: "We're planning on smacking them down like the hand of God."
Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz)
Tina is a goth who's really shy and has been pretending to have a stutter since sixth grade, but after joining Glee she's realized that she doesn't want to drive people away anymore. She likes Artie a lot, but he didn't want to be with her after she confessed to him that she's been faking it.
Sue nickname: "Asian"
Tina Quote: "We're d-d-doomed."
Rachel Berry (Lea Michele)
Rachel has a voice sent from heaven, but unfortunately a personality that is, well, grating at times. She knows she's going to be a successful star and works on every part of her life so she can stay on the track to stardom. She's not willing to give up her place in the spotlight for anyone else, not even fellow gleeks. Part of this may have been inspired by her gay dads (Jewish and black respectively) who have always encouraged her ambition.
It doesn't mean she's not caring or that she holds grudges - she's helped and forgiven both Puck and Quinn for bullying her and accepts them as full on gleeks. She cares a lot for Finn, who's her main crush. Other (passing) crushes are Mr. Schuester and Puck. But of all the gleeks, she's probably (as of yet) the only one who hasn't made any real friendships with the rest of the gang. Finn likes her a lot, but the situation's complicated.
Rachel Quote: "You may laugh because every time I sign my name I put a gold star after it. But it's a metaphor, and metaphors are important. My gold stars are a metaphor for me being a star."
Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith)
The star quarterback who loves to sing and drum - he's usually the male lead in the club. Finn's a really nice guy, the kind you can bring home to meet your parents, and he tries to get everyone else to be nice to each other. He struggles to deal with all the pressure in his life, from school to football to glee and to his mom (his dad was a soldier who died in the line of duty). He has a gift with getting his way when it comes to school - one time Coach Tanaka tries to make him and the rest of the jock gleeks choose between Glee or football, but Finn manages to convince him to let them do both.
Finn really doesn't want to be stuck in Lima for the rest of his life and he has his hopes set on a scholarship so he can go to college. That hope is pretty much dashed when his girlfriend Quinn becomes pregnant, even though they've never had sex (there's an explanation with a bath tub and premature ejaculation here, which, yeah... I never said Finn was smart). Even though he's scared to become a father, he really cares about his unborn daughter.
Dakota nickname: "Frankenteen"
Finn Quote: "The guys said if I took the Glee club photo, they'd make me choose between a Hitler mustache and buck teeth. And I can't rock either of those looks."
Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron)
Quinn was the head Cheerio who joined Glee to keep an eye on her boyfriend (Finn) and spy on/sabotage the club for Sue, but after the news of her pregnancy got around she was kicked out of the Cheerios. She's starting to become more and more attached to everyone in the club and has expressed pride in being a member of it.
Quinn is a devout Christian and (used to be) president of the Celibacy club. She slept with Puck once (blaming it on alcohol and low self-esteem, although Finn and Rachel flirting probably helped too) and doesn't want to admit he's the father of her baby. Still, she has feelings for him and keeps wavering between him and Finn- and whether she's giving the baby to Terri or keeping her.
When Finn tells Quinn's parents that she's pregnant, they throw her out of her home. Finn's mom takes her in.
It's also mentioned that she has an older sister.
Quinn Quote: "What I need right now, even more than looser pants, is acceptance."
Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera)
A Cheerio who joined Glee when Quinn did. She can be ruthlessly mean and bitchy. Used to date Puck and still stakes her claim on him, but she's also seen being close to Matt and Brittany, so who knows?
Santana Quote: "My sexts are too hot to erase."
Brittany (Heather Morris)
A Dutch-American Cheerio. She joined Glee with Santana and Quinn, and still spies (badly) on the club for Coach Sylvester. Even though Brittany's really not the sharpest knife in the drawer and takes part in bullying others (such as defacing yearbook pictures), she's sweet and lovely and won't let other people's opinions influence who she's friends with.
Brittany Quote: "I find recipes confusing."
Noah “Puck” Puckerman (Mark Salling)
The hottest of the hot, sex on two legs etc. Fits the stereotype of the dumb jock who's a bully with only sex on his mind, but after joining Glee and facing ridicule for it he's starting to grow up. He mostly prefers sexing up the hot moms he meets through his pool cleaning business (or through the Acafellas), although he'll basically flirt with just about anyone - there's even a scene where he comes half-naked out of the showers with April and Matt! He's perfect as the fandom's "little black dress" ^_^
Puck's best friends with Finn, but slept with Quinn anyway and got her pregnant. He really wants to be there for their baby and have a family with Quinn, but he doesn't want to stop being himself, i.e. having sex with everything that moves. He used to date Santana, who dumped him because of his bad credit score, and now they're back to flirting with each other.
He lives with his mother and little sister. For his mother's sake he tries to be a good Jewish boy, so he dates Rachel (who's a nice Jewish girl) for a little while. We never see his dad, but Puck mentions him as being a deadbeat and someone he doesn't want to emulate.
He, like the rest, has ambition to be something more than just a Lima loser. When push comes to shove he chooses Glee over football. Not one of those who usually gets to be the lead singer, although he did blow everyone's minds when he sang Sweet Caroline. He also plays the guitar.
Puck Quote: "I love the days when I don’t wear underwear. Full commando."
Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.)
Joined Glee with Puck and Matt after Will helped the football team. He's an incredible dancer, especially when it comes to pop-and-lock. He chooses Glee over football, but got to stay on the team after Finn talked to the coach.
Sue nickname: "Other Asian"
Mike Quote: "I can pop and lock"
Matt Rutherford (Dijon Talton)
Joined Glee with Puck and Mike. Matt too chose Glee over football. He has some fine dance moves. AND he got himself some April Rhodes in the showers with Puck.
Sue nickname: "Shaft"
Matt Quote: ...I'm not sure Matt's had a line yet.
OTHER CHARACTERS
Ken Tanaka (Patrick Gallagher)
Ken is the coach with the creepily short shorts for Lima High’s football team, and he is very much in love with Emma, despite being aware of both her quirks and her infatuation with Will. After talking to Terri, who plays on his inferiority complex, he proposes to Emma. While to begin with not averse to letting Will try to recruit members from his team, he later tries to make the jocks choose between Glee and football.
At one point he’s also a member of the Acafellas.
Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba)
Struggles to turn every penny into a pound and even though he enjoys the glee clubs performances, he's still often one of the many things standing in their way, mostly because Sue uses him to get her way or because he can't afford to give them any money. There are still times when he helps the club out, such as when he cuts the Cheerios dry cleaning budget back for the gleeks' benefit. He's a stickler for keeping the school out of trouble.
Burt Hummel (Mike O'Malley)
Kurt's very supportive blue-collar dad. He owns an auto shop and has taught Kurt a lot about cars. He finds it a bit difficult dealing with his son's more flamboyant sides and isn't quite ready to talk about boys with him yet, but he's getting there and if one thing's for certain it's that Burt won't let anyone treat Kurt differently just because he is who he is. Burt mostly wishes Kurt's mom were there to help them. He still hasn't packed her things away.
"I've known since you were three. All you wanted for your birthday was a pair of sensible heels. I guess I'm not totally in love with the idea, but, if that's who you are, there's nothing I can do about it. And I love you just as much. Ok?"
April Rhodes (Kristin Chenoweth)
An alcoholic and a member of the Glee Club when Will was a student. She never graduated and Will convinces her to return to school and the club to help them out and she spends some time corrupting the kids and doing pretty well for herself, until she decides that her time in the spotlight is over and leaves.
Sandy Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky)
Former director of the Glee Club. Very creepy. Joined forces with Sue at one point so they could bring Will down. Also sells medical marihuana after he lost his job.
Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman)
The school reporter with a crush on Rachel. He has a blog where he posts just about every piece of gossip he can get his hands on... He's sort of like a straight teenage Perez Hilton. He's very paparazzi.
Kendra Giardi (Jennifer Aspen)
Terri's sister. She has a husband, Phil, whom she controls with a steel fist and triplet sons who run wild. IMHO she gives the worst advice ever, convincing Terri that it's a good idea to continue the subterfuge and keep on fooling Will.
Carole Hudson (Romy Rosemont)
Finn's mom. Finn thinks it's been hard on her being a single mom since his dad died. She's very upset when she finds out Quinn's pregnant, but she's there to support them both.
Howard Bamboo (Kent Avenido)
A dyslexic who works at Sheets and Things with Terri. He has a tendency to get pulled into her smaller schemes. At one point he joined Acafellas, but he left before their big performance.
Rod Remington (Bill A. Jones)
Local news caster who has a brief flirt with Sue before she discovers his nonmonogamous ways. Loves to swing, both when it comes to relationships and when it comes to dance.
Andrea Carmichael (Earlene Davis)
Rod's colleague and sometimes lover.
Dr. Wu (Kenneth Choi)
Quinn and Terri's "baby doctor". He gets blackmailed into showing Will Quinn's ultrasound tape when he and Terri comes in for a session.
Russell Fabray (Gregg Henry)
Quinn's very religious and strict father. He's not so happy when his baby girl can't live up to his standards.
Judy Fabray (Charlotte Russ)
Quinn's mother. She'd rather ignore that something's wrong than make a scene.

Grace Hitchens (Eve)
Director of the glee club at a correctional facility school for girls. Just want to teach her kids about doing things the right way, which is why it's bad when Sue offers her a chance to cheat at sectionals.
Dalton Rumba (Michael Hitchcock)
Director of the glee club at a school for deaf children. Lost his hearing on one ear as a child. Sue also gives his club the opportunity to cheat.
Dakota Stanley (Whit Hertford)
Star show choir choreographer with unrealistic expectations. He does the choreography for Vocal Adrenaline, one of the rival clubs the gleeks will meet at regionals. New Directions hire him once, but fire him again when they get to experience first hand how horrible he is.
Dave Karofsky (Max Adler)
A jock who loves being able to bully the former golden kids of McKinley High. If he gets a chance to slushee Finn, Quinn or Puck he takes it.
Jean Sylvester (Robin Trocki)
Sue's sister. She has Downs and lives in a home. Her favorite story is Little Red Riding Hood.
Suzy Pepper (Sarah Drew)
Student who had a fixation on Will. She commited self-harm by pepper when he spurned her advances, but happily therapy has done a lot of good for her now.
Josh Groban (Josh Groban)
As himself. He stops by to tell Sandy to stop stalking him. And to flirt with Will's mom.
Will's Mom (Debra Monk)
She's a drunk, but a fun drunk.
Will's dad (Victor Garber)
Inspired by Will's courage he decides to follow a dream of his own and join law school.
Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter)
A student with Downs Syndrome. She's really good friends with Brittany and she joins the Cheerios. She's awesome.
