Why this must be read: As much as I love Merry/Pippin, I still think Frodo and Sam are Lord of the Rings's Supercouple. An Ordinary Evening turns out to be anything but, as a quintessential domestic fic melts into a deliciously smutty scene and then a tender exchange of devotion. The story takes place somewhere in the middle of that long stretch of years between Frodo's coming of age and the quest itself. Frodo and Sam have long been settled in romantic bliss and haven't a care in the world, so of course Frodo concocts one from their supposed domestic rut. He has been taking a keen astronomical interest in the wandering star Beren and starts to see something of his own life in the heavens; he doesn't want to be ordinary, but he doesn't want to become lost either. The story ends on a hopeful yet poignant note; the reader already knows how their tale will eventually end, and it is not the way Frodo and Sam imagine.

The sex scene hits a whole heap of buttons - power exchange, strip tease, blindfold, masturbation, voyeurism - and the prose, particularly the dialogue, is almost uncomfortably intimate; Sam calls Frodo his lamb and has a habit of referring to himself in the third person, which can be a little squirm-inducing (I mean that in a good way!) What really grabs me, however, is the blatant tenderness and adoration they have for each other, even after so many years.
