Why this must be read: Fic by this author really needs no introduction. Pick any Forever Knight story by her and you're bound to pick a winner. I find this particular story appealing because of the wonderful way Susan builds on the world of show by fleshing out characters that only talked about but never seen. In this case, it's Jenny Schanke, the young daughter of Nick's partner. Through her Nick begins to get an idea of how he has unintentionally weaved his way into the lives of a lot of people.

"Dad told Mom and me that if anything ever happened, we had to call you. 'Cause you'd make sure it's all right. And that's okay, but . . . you won't let anything happen to Dad at all. Not even the worst of the worse guys. Like Batman. You'll keep 'em away from Dad?"

"Just like Batman." Then he leaned back in his chair. "You know, your dad's pretty good at taking care of himself. He's saved me a couple of times. And lots of other people."

Her sniffles ending, Jenny blew her nose again, then handed him the napkin for disposal. "I know. Dad's pretty cool. But you won't tell him I said so, okay? 'Cause . . . you know how he gets."
