Hello! My name is Kita, and I'll be your January driver for NCIS. My recs for this month will concentrate on underappreciated short or experimental pieces in a wide range of pairings and genres. I hope you enjoy the ride!
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Jenny/Ziva, Gibbs/Tony; past Gibbs/Jenny
Length: twenty-six connected drabbles, totaling 2600 words
Author on LJ: Sabine (
iamsab)
Author Website: Sabine's fanfic journal (
fromthesabrary)
Why this must be read:
This story is one of the reasons I signed up to drive the van. It's complex, lyrical, well-crafted, and mature, and I think it has one comment.
Don't expect a straightforward narrative with this one, since it's a series of connected drabbles (one for each letter of the alphabet). Instead, be prepared for a story told in snapshots. Moments from the NCIS team alternate with moments from Ziva and Jenny's missions in Europe circa 2004, as well as Jenny and Gibbs' missions circa 1994. Each is evocative, with subtle, complex emotion and a beautiful sense of place and time. An excerpt:
This silk is worth three, maybe four lira, but Americans will pay maybe a hundred fifty. Ziva slides her sunglasses down on her nose to look at the market and the sky.
"How much?" asks Special Agent Shepard, and the Turk swipes snot from his mustache.
"For you?" he coughs. "One hundred."
Shepard studies the cloth, holds it up to the sky where the pattern is bleached by the merciless white of the sun. "I'll give you five," she says in Turkish. The man snuffs again and is embarrassed.
"Deal," says Ziva, laying a five lira note on the table.
Go. Read. Enjoy. Review.
