A Taste of This, by Jane St Clair
Fandom: Firefly
Title: Taste of This
Rating: PGish - mature themes, no adverse content
Pairing: None explicit
Author on LJ:
3jane
Author's Website: Janefic
Why this must be read:
Because Jane St Clair is one of those multi-fandom divas who, it seems, hits a crystal clear note every time she posts a fic. (I'm exaggerating a bit here, but run with it a minute, k?) And she's not written a lot of Firefly, so you should read all you can.
And this fic must also be read because it's four stories about Simons that never were, and yet are all reflections of the Simon we know. For people who adore AU's, the 'Five Things that Never Happened' format is the best thing since sliced bread. For people who like AUs *and* angst, it's even better.
(Don't say I didn't warn you about the tone of this story.)
Finally, while many writers use the FF western mythos well, and most attempt the Chinese slang, very few reach this level of authentic feel of Chinese culture, including the languages, the dance troupes and the ancestor worship.
Go, read. I hope you like it as much as I did.
