Why this must be read:

Stark is a character who wanders in and out of the Farscape cast from late Season One onwards. We're first introduced to him as Scorpius's crazy prisoner, and it emerges that he's a Banik, a member of a species who are most usually kept as slaves. But Stark isn't just any Banik, he's a special Banik called a Stykera, a kind of shamanistic figure who helps dying people move on to the 'other side'.

Stykera are more in demand as slaves than other Baniks, and his special abilities seem to be the reason Scorpius has taken an interest in Stark. (Actually, that point is rather confusing in canon, but you don't need to hear the debate.) We don't know much about Stark's background other than that he seems to have been held by the Scarrans for a while, as well - the guy gets around. And that whatever he's experienced, it's left him with an often dubious grip on reality and sanity.

In Resurgam Eve11 imagines a background for Stark with amazing lyrical beauty. The prose only enhances the brutality of what he's suffered from his earliest years in a slave camp to his time as a prisoner of the Scarrans. I can't say much more about this other than 'read it now!' but I also appreciate the unobtrusive original character. As far as I'm concerned, this is Stark's origin story.

When he was seven cycles old the world started to fade away. Color abandoned him first; vibrant red faded to rust, blue sunk in to black, violet and white merged together into gray. The sky was permanently cloudy, the sun went from orange to a gray ghost at his back. In the fields, the flowers dimmed.
