The Best Medicine by Russet McMillan, mcmillan@apo.nmsu.edu (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE
Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan (Obi/Various)
Author on LJ:
Author Website: Via Pumpkin's Slash Patch
Why this must be read:
"Jedi Kenobi!" she whistled. "I must thank you and your master for saving my ship. The pirates sent in three boarding parties by different routes, and you stopped all of them."
Obi-Wan bowed. "No need to thank us, Captain Ctecteru. It was our duty and the will of the Force. Tell me, is your daughter feeling better?"
..."She's still frightened, but not badly hurt. There is a hairline fracture in her shoulder -- nothing serious...Master Jinn saved her from being badly injured or killed. I hope he will recover?"
"He will, but the healing will be difficult. The left side of his face was badly injured."
The captain closed her eyes and ducked her head to one side in horrified denial. "Terrible, terrible. Are you saying he will be . . . asymmetrical?"
So begins "The Best Medicine." After a pirate attack leaves one side of Qui-Gon's face shattered and one eye in peril, Obi-Wan tries to convince him that healing his eye in time for them to appear before the aesthetically demanding Bristeens is worth the price - sex with his "underage" (19 years old, but not yet a knight and therefore in a position of obedience and trust) padawan. This story was part of fandom debates on chanslash - should the story's context determine the age of consent (i.e. wizarding age of consent, Klingon age of consent, Jedi age of consent, exc.) or should the national origin of fic authors determine this age (i.e America versus Britain versus Canada, exc.). Should any of this limit what we can/should read/write in fan fiction? This story includes discussion of Obi-Wan's developing sexuality from the age of 14 and some interesting development regarding ties between the unifying versus living force and their relationship to sexuality. The author considers age of consent with regard to formal legal controls in various planets, and with regard to the special relationship of trust between master and padawan. Highlights include classic hurt/comfort scenario, lengthy flashbacks to a number of well developed alien cultures, and zero gravity sex.
