Why this must be read:

The Joker's madness is so well done in this piece, the author does such a wonderful job showing her readers the depths of this character's tortured mind. I loved the feeling of chaos throughout the story, with the Joker's broken thoughts adding to the darkness of the piece.

Doctor so and so is a man of his word, every day at the top of the morning.

He says things like, "and you feel this because?" or, the Joker's personal favorite, "do you have a name that you prefer to use?" because there are good men that strive to be a little polite and mean it, even if it just pays the bills. He can appreciate that. He was a good boy once.

So he sits, straight at the glass. Too wide, he thinks. It's clear and they can see him; blankets and pillows in the morning and night, dinner and other meals, and his cock to the song of the Calendar Man - April showers! Bring May flowers! You have to get it where you can.

"Can we talk about the Bat?"

Isn’t this what it's really about? And his hair falls in strings, along the smear of his jaw. They let him keep the white, but he's responsible for the red, still picking at the mouth of his scars to keep up his appearances. The doctor sighs from the other side and frowns too as an important man, flustered and frustrated, should do. There is a pad of paper and a pen. He wants to recommend pencils, but he and doctor so and so are brand new friends.

"The Bat?" Doctor so and so is polite, coming into the glass. "Of course."

In the hall, the light trips into the man's head and wrinkles into the grays of his hair. Never out of place, he must have daughters. The Joker might've had a daughter or son. It could've just been Tuesday. Bar night. He likes bars.

"Eh."

He chuckles. Then quiets. Down the hall, he assumes the Calendar Man is watching.

"The walls, the walls," he tells doctor so and so, "they go two by two and four by four and it's almost as if it's trying to tell me that you can hold me in. I'm sure he'd appreciate that too."

He misses the city, he thinks. And the walls of buildings, the lights and the hustle and bustle. Perhaps, he'll skip into Christmas and the snow. Lick and dance with legs like a dog.

He grins widely.

"I wonder if he misses me, you know?"

Doctor so and so just frowns. Of course, of course!

The Joker starts to plan for a pencil.
