I gave in and decided to pick this as my crossover fic because even though there are superhero universes, DC and Marvel rivalries can’t keep this being a single universe. Basically, billionaire genius playboy philanthropist non-super-powered superheroes meet and Tony Stark decides he wants to keep Bruce Wayne. Who takes some convincing in between the times he spends rolling his eyes at Tony Stark and protecting Gotham.DCU’s Justice League doesn’t come along with the Batman attachment, but SHIELD and the Avengers show up to colour Tony’s life.

Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne seem like the type of characters that would get each other on some fundamental level well enough that they’d hate each other or become metaphorically attached at the hip because they’re on the same brainwave. This fic goes the shipping route. There are allusions to superhero-ing angst related to human limits, a power couple now with a combined wealth that makes them richer than god, and people trying to juggle hero duties, real world jobs, and relationships.

This guy has done a ton of vids, spoofing the Marvel and DC movieverses using the Mac/PC commercial format.  They're good vids, but far and away the best one is this one, which turns into a musical of Iron Man explaining the Marvel movie strategy to Batman, while Superman tries to defend the DC movies.  It's hilarious, partly because it's so true.  The more you know about comic book movies the funnier it is, but my parents who know almost nothing about comic book movies still enjoyed it.

Why this vid kicks ass: This is one of those fanvids that you'll find yourself watching over and over again. I would know, when I first found this vid I must have hit the replay button at least five times in a row. What makes this fanvid kick ass is the combination of great song selection and very sharp editing by the vidder. This is a powerful piece, which everyone should take the time to watch.

I don't really know where to begin with this story, the author describes it as Bruce Wayne spend[ing] time on Jim Gordon's side of the tracks and overall having very little plot. Personally, I'd call it a very intricate character study with two of the most heartbreaking characterizations of Jim and Bruce that I've ever read.

Because it's such a great concept, and who better than Edward Blake could produce someone as fucked up as the Joker. This piece is a prime example of the beauty of crossovers, bringing two universes together in a way that will forever change how you see each canon ever again. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer.

This is the sequel to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s To Serve and Protect (which I have already rec'd over here) but it's not really necessary to read that piece in order to enjoy this one. Jim and Batman are an established couple as this story opens, but Gordon is still left in the dark when it comes to knowing the identity of his mysterious partner; that's where the fun begins, as Bruce takes it upon himself to get to know Jim as "Bruce Wayne, Playboy Billionaire" to the complete bafflement of the good Commissioner.

In canon, Jim Gordon trusts Batman for no other reason than his own blind faith that he will be there for himself and Gotham City should the need arise. [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] uses this core relationship, along with excellent characterizations, and wonderful storytelling, to bring Batman and Gordon together in one of my favorite pieces in the fandom. This multi-chapter story (taking place after the events of The Dark Knight) deals with the after effects that the Joker's rampage left on one Jim Gordon; his marriage, his relationship with Batman, and the left-over corruption on the force who will try and kill him once and for all.

Why this must be read:

Because canon dealt Rachel Dawes a harsh hand, and what's the point of fandom if not to fix the mistakes of the original source, give layers to seemingly one-note characters, or in the case of this story give a female character who many might dismiss as "just a love interest" a very satisfying ending.

She wakes to a brand new Gotham. The news plays Harvey's 'memorial' and Leslie tells her the truth.

"It's over then," she says. The weight of it presses down on her. If she could run, she would. She remembers her parting words to Alfred. She looks at Leslie, wanting to ask how she keeps doing this, but she can't. Not without betraying Bruce's secret and she won't do it. She's done enough already.

Leslie smiles, a quick, wry twisting of her lips. Her tone is knowing as she says, "My dear, it's only just begun."

Why this vid kicks ass: This songvid is technically the second of a matching pair, but I think it stands alone just fine (the other is available at the same splash page linked below, if you're interested). What I love about "Stay" is the way it melds the three different sources to create a love triangle between characters who share a universe (Batman/Superman) but never appear in the same show! This vid beautifully demonstrates just how much illusion there is in the art of editing. And also? That love triangles which include Catwoman are made of win.

Why this must be read:

Back when JLU was still Justice League, speculation abounded whether or not Batman Beyond was the canonical future, or just one possible future. The producers sat back and grinned and said non-specific things. Then the episode "The Once and Future Thing" aired, and the followup "Epilogue," which not only sealed the deal, bur served as a possibly unique case of the season finale of one show being used as the series finale of another.

"Twenty Truths" is a deft little story that blends the pieces we saw in "TOaFT" and "Epilogue," and merges them with what we saw in the Batman Beyond episode "The Call." The story is a series of twenty short pieces, none of them longer than about two hundred words, each a perfect little picture of the BB world as would have echoed from the events in JLU. The one truth to take away from the story is that cycles repeat, and sometimes this is a wonderful thing.
