Welcome, Masters and Padawans, I'm  [livejournal.com profile] albumsontheside and I'll be piloting the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van  for you this month! As you all know, my recs focus on the much neglected areas of the Galaxy Far Far Away: gen, het and humour, because, frankly, I think this comm has enough Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan angst to last any self-respecting Jedi a lifetime.

Fandom: STAR WARS (AU)
Pairing: implied Anakin/Padmé, but the fic is gen

Why this must be read: So, I'm opening the month with one of my favourite authors of all time. [livejournal.com profile] fialleril is well-known for writing powerful, insightful pieces that give a glimpse into Anakin's mind in a few powerful and well-chosen words. Rather than writing long reams of angst -- although she has written chapter fic before, and writes it well -- Fortunate Son is short, and almost agonisingly so. The end is perfectly timed, yet the reader wants more.

Fortunate Son really drives home the horrors of war, the mental turmoil plaguing Anakin and the sense of conflict he feels as he's torn between the two driving forces in his life: his wife and his mentor. In Fortunate Son, Anakin comes home on leave and attempts to deal with the war, and [livejournal.com profile] fialleril paints a perfect picture of a broken man, suffering from trauma and trying to find peace. While sympathetic to Anakin, there are also hints at the darker sides of his character, and how war is slowly changing him into something darker, more ugly.

On the third day of his leave, Chancellor Palpatine invites him to a performance at the opera. He decides to go because he has nothing better to do, and because he barely slept the night before and his hand (the one that’s no longer there) is throbbing.

This is how it happens: the Chancellor says, “You might find it a pleasant distraction.”

Anakin says, “Yes, we don’t get much entertainment in the field.” He even laughs a bit.

This is how this sort of conversation goes. He knows the script.

Um, I don't think this is supposed to be f-locked.
