Why this must be read: Set after Wagon Train this story explores what might have happened between Vin and Ezra when they returned to town. Neither man is happy with the other's behaviour and the author does a great job illustrating how they resolve the unhappiness.

Ezra and Vin are depicted as two pragmatic men who both see and learn from their mistakes. I like how the author works through the brooding at the beginning to a more playful ending, with both men more aware of where they stand in the world and with each other.

Excerpt: Maybe it was how tired he was, but damned if Ezra’s words weren’t beginning to make sense. He felt like he’d suddenly become lighter. What the hell had he been thinking? He’d been honest with Charlotte. It was true what he’d said about never wanting to tame no land. Man with a price on his head had no business putting another person in danger like that, especially not a woman. Pretty damned selfish of him, now that he’d come to think on it a bit.

And, as much as he hated to admit it and it pained him to do so, Ezra was right. He’d known inside he wasn’t like other men and neither were any of the other six men he’d taken up with. What he used to know and now knew again was that it was just who they were. World needed all kinds, he supposed.

Ezra, sure of himself as always, was preening a bit and that didn’t sit well with Vin. There had to be some way to take him down a peg, even though he was right.
