Ace in the Hole by Marg Baskin (G)
Howdy, I’m JoJo (
solosundance aka
innocentculprit ), a newish convert to the wonder that is Mag7. Because this is my first time and I don’t know the trail very well, I’m sticking to Old West. It's why I trotted into Four Corners in the first place (‘kay, finished with the horse metaphors now) and what can I say ... hats and spurs do it for me every time. There’ll be Gen, because there’s great Gen fic, and Slash (varied flavours) because pretty, roughy-toughy men in 19th century costume coupling up is one of the most awesome things I can think of. Oh, and despite my own tendency to fling angst and injury about like there’s no tomorrow, it won’t all be blood and disaster. Hope that’s OK :)
Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: none
Length: 485K
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: not known
Why this must be read: Because it’s an early fandom story (the first posted at Blackraptor apparently and the only story by this author I could find anywhere). This lends it a real freshness and character of its own.
You will need time because it’s long, but so worth bookmarking for a rainy day. It begins and ends with Four Corners stewing in the sun and clops along in a lovely rhythm with meaty, canon-based plot, delicious dialogue and great characterisation. The seven are at a fairly exploratory stage of their association (between One Day Out West and Working Girls) and although ostensibly a JD story, all the boys are subtly drawn, as well as OCs and other canon characters. Chris is wonderfully Larabee throughout - grouchy and hurting and just beginning to thaw out with the help of his disparate and characterful co-workers :)
The thing is, I really like the kid. He reminds me of me when I was that age. Well, except, you know ..." One of his big hands came up, stretched up as high as he could reach from his seated position, then dropped a foot or so lower " ... shorter. And, well, maybe a bit more serious... And nowheres near as accomplished with the ladies. Hell, by the time I was his age, I'd been..." He trailed off and thought about it for a minute. "Y'know, Chris, come to think of it, he ain't the slightest bit like I was at that age, but I still like him."
