The Things He Says by Delphi (NC-17)

Why this must be read:  Well, while realizing that Josiah/Ezra is not the world’s favourite Mag7 pairing, I had to rec at least one fic by this author because Delphi writes the gambler and the preacher so beautifully.

For a start, her Ezra is an absolute treat - snarky, manly, grown-up, flawed and downright sexeh - exactly as I see him in (particularly early) canon, although not always in fic.  And his relationship with Josiah - secretive, slightly kinky and dangerous - is spot-on and wholly believable.  What's more, there's something very touching and profound about it.  Much as I enjoy the imaginary father-son relationship of fanon, I really love that this author has substituted something equally loving but desperately hot in its place.  And not just hot for the sake of the hot, if y’all know what I mean.  The age difference, the physical difference and the personality gulf between Josiah and Ezra are not overlooked, but written in such a way it has you rooting for them and wanting to know how on earth they are going to make this madness work.

He expected Ezra to interrupt him, but he didn't. So he read on a while, and Ezra lay back with his arms folded behind his head. It was nice, actually. It was...cozy. A little less fraught than their usual late-night talks, maybe, with someone else's words filling up the silence. He read until the candlelight made his vision blur, and when Ezra looked over in query at the pause, he handed the book over and Ezra took up where he'd left off.

Wow, I suck. I've enjoyed her drabbles so much, but never thought to click over to look for other work. Thank ye! :)
