Why this must be read:

Because this author perfectly executes the characterization of an Obi-Wan Kenobi, who could possibly fall to the dark side. Anakin's anger and despair over potentially losing his Master is very well done; as is Obi-Wan's subtle manipulation of his Padawan, using the hard truths of their relationship and Anakin's love as an effective weapon to make Anakin fall with him.

“You were never a very good Padawan.”

The words cut. Anakin can feel rage and resentment well up through the gash of the wound, but amidst them seeps despair, and the despair is the most powerful.

“You never listened, or waited, and you always talked back.”

There is humor in Obi-Wan’s voice and a laugh on his breath. His eyes are gray in the pale light of this planet’s two night-moons.

“Master.”

The title is a plea. The past tense sinks as a cold weight in Anakin’s stomach. He has given things up to find this man. He has defied his new Master and left his wife alone for months. He is uncertain what he will go home to. It will be worse to return alone. He wills his rage to rise to the fore -- anger for all this wasted effort -- but for now, it abates in the face of a spreading chill. A part of him feels the worst failures are his -- for heeling to the Jedi Council’s commands and not coming sooner. Why hadn’t he left sooner? He had disobeyed Obi-Wan in little defiances so many times. Had they ever really convinced him Obi-Wan was dead?

“Have I ever been your Master?” Obi-Wan fingers the braid gently, examining the twists of blonde hair and the small tie at its end. He looks up. His gaze is cool and his words foreboding. “Do you want me to be?”

Anakin’s chest clenches with apprehension. He would like little more than to be told what to do, now. For once, he might be willing to really listen. But something is gone from the Master he has learned to depend on. Dooku, he knows, has taken it.

“Master,” he repeats, looking to his training for a way to let the word go. “I don’t want to fight you.”

“You aren’t going to fight me,” Obi-Wan sounds sure, and, for a moment, Anakin doubts himself. “You came here to save me, Padawan.”

“This isn’t you.” The words mean what they should, but Anakin has to struggle to believe them. Obi-Wan, standing so close, shorter and slighter than he is, rings authentic to all his senses. “Whatever Dooku did to you--“

The words drop off as Obi-Wan lays the braid to rest against his shoulder with an apologetic smile. “You know, I never wanted you.”

Anakin falters beneath the weight of the reality. “I know,” he hears himself admit.
