Why this must be read: Maybe it's because I fumbled through Bright Lights, Big City, but I am not a fan of second person point of view. Most of the time – or, it takes a very good fic to change my mind. This is that fic for me. Vel's myriad talents shine in this one-shot. As can be expected of her fan fiction, the language is evocative and the atmosphere is teased out of small details that reveal the story. While impressive, nothing comes close to her characterization of Dean and how he loves Sam and why it is nothing short of veristic from the sweat to the taste of a kiss. The prose holds its own as the story winds like a snake eating its tail until the ending comes fast and sweet, but gorgeously written in Vel's signature style. This is a slice of Winchester life with all of the grit and grime of life on the road and relationship that goes too far even as it never seems to be enough for Sam or Dean. Or the reader, as I want more even as the story delivers delicious satiety.
