Why this must be read:

Because even though we know how things went down the night Geoffrey Tennant went mad, we can't help but be swept away into seeing it again through Cyril's eyes. As it stands, Cyril is one of the series' secondary characters, but he is also someone whose theatrical knowledge (as an actor, at least) is very much alive. Intertwined with that particularly terrible Hamlet performance, we get to see a little bit more of what Cyril's life is like. There is some humour in Cyril's reflections about his relationship with the absent Frank. A worthy read.

One thing that Cyril knows about theater--four decades treading the boards, thank you very kindly, and sometimes it's been rather more like treading water--one thing he knows is that it does not kill you. No matter how badly you botch your lines, how completely you make an ass of yourself, the stage never opens and swallows you up. You don't disappear.

Unless, apparently, you are Geoffrey Tennant.

Cyril needs a drink.
