Why this must be read: One of my real weaknesses in Reboot!Trek is Kirk coming to terms with his position of captain and learning all the stuff he has to know. This story does have a plot (tribbles!), but that's really the the background to Kirk getting to know his ship and his crew. Lovely and humorous, with bonus Sulu and sword.

“Yes,” he said, a bit more confidently as he remembered that this was his ship and, actually, he could press any buttons he liked. He waved his hands expansively. “I want to know every detail about my ship, Lieutenant, every nuance, every quirk. I want to be able to find my way round blindfolded and know what speed she’s going by the vibrations in the deck-plating. And that includes knowing how the communications console works.”
