Seven conversations in the life of a genius by mercurial_wit (R)

Hello crack van! I'm Nicole Anell and I'll be your May 2010 driver for Battlestar Galactica. Which means, I should warn you, you're about to endure the MONTH WHERE WE HAVE A MONTH OF GAIUS/SIX RECS. But I promise I'll insert some non-Gaius/Six variety too. :D

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW)
Pairing: Baltar/OFCs, Baltar/Six, Baltar/Kara; references Roslin/Adar and Kara/Lee
Length: 8,041 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mercurial_wit

Why this must be read:

Speaking as an official Fangirl Authority on Gaius Baltar, I can tell you this is my all-time favorite fic about him. And just an excellent fic in general if you like beautiful prose, great dialogue, and seeing characters in totally different but canon-supported situations. It's a series of glimpses into Gaius' life and relationships with women, mostly pre-series. (Including his alluded-to meeting with Roslin at the Caprica City Symposium prior to the miniseries! Which is awesome in itself!)

Every piece is fantastic, although the section with Caprica-Six is especially lovely and hits just the right tone of ominous and sweet. This is not a fic that makes excuses for Baltar or white-washes his flaws: his vanity and selfishness and carefully-honed talents for lying his ass off. Instead it's a perceptive character study that places him in different settings than we're used to and fits perfectly with the appalling, pitiful, fascinating man he will become.

(Side note: This fic was written prior to season 3, so some elements of Gaius' childhood have been Jossed since then. But since the author got certain things completely right -- him coming from a non-upper-class background and being ashamed of it -- I consider her extra insightful.)
