Why this must be read:

I have a thing for slave fics. It started with the NCIS fandom (I think) and then I expanded from there into other genres, including original fics. Then [livejournal.com profile] hawk_soaring started posting Keeper as her 2007 Nano entry. Every day from November 2007 until September 2008, she would add a new part to Keeper. I found myself staying up until the next part was posted in order to read it.

The story starts pre-series in an AU world where slavery has been adopted, both consensual slavery and what is known as convict slavery. In this, Tony's father is the ultimate bad guy. I found myself wanting to do very dark things to Tony's father through this story. It is a very emotional story because of how far she takes the characters through the ringer. I cried many times while reading. I also abused my 'Tony needs a hug' icon a lot during the fic. It is extremely long, but well worth the read. She also has a sequel that is currently in zine form...

Excerpt

Tony's second day at work was much better than his first. He'd ridden in the back of the SUV in the slave cage, therefore he wasn't nauseous when he arrived. The procedure at the security check-point was much simpler now that Tony had been entered into the computer system. All the security officer had to do was wand Tony in. Jethro then clipped Tony's ID badge to his collar and they headed upstairs to the bullpen.

Once in the elevator, Jethro carded his fingers through Tony's hair as the younger man knelt at his owner's side. "You seem nervous," Jethro said softly.

Tony shrugged. "A little. I didn't exactly make a good first impression."

Jethro smiled and tugged on Tony's hair. "No one will think less of you for getting sick."

Tony sighed and pulled away from Jethro's hand. "No one will think of a convict at all, Jethro," he said stubbornly.

Just then the elevator doors opened and Jethro sighed. "Come on, Tony. Let's get to work."

Tony got to his feet as Jethro started moving and followed him to his desk. He sank to his knees beside Jethro, trying to seem invisible, as the other man greeted his team. As Tony knelt beside Jethro his skin began to itch as if someone was watching him. He glanced up quickly, scanning the immediate area, and his breath caught in his throat as his eyes met startling green ones from across the small open space between the desks of Jethro's team. He quickly dropped his gaze to the floor, hoping that Jethro didn't notice the other man staring at him. If there was one thing he knew about his owner it was that Jethro was territorial. He definitely didn't want any other dogs pissing in his garden.

Somehow, Tony managed to lose the thread of conversation, not paying attention to what was going on and he was a beat slow getting to his feet as Jethro moved to sit at his desk. His face flamed as he walked to the desk and started to kneel beside Jethro's chair. Behind Jethro's desk was a midnight blue cushion - a slave pillow. He blanched as he looked down at it, mentally calculating the area needed to kneel comfortably without touching the hated cushion.

Jethro watched his slave and frowned. "Tony," he growled.

Tony's eyes met his. He didn't want to touch the slave cushion, but he knew if he didn't kneel immediately he would be in trouble - trouble that Jethro wouldn't be able to shrug off. What was worse, he knew, without looking around, that the rest of the team was watching also. With a soft sigh, he knelt, pushing the pillow aside with his knees. "I'm sorry, Jethro," he murmured as he dropped his gaze.

"Your knees can't handle this floor for long, Tony. Why don't you sit on the cushion?"

Tony licked his lips. "Do I have to?" he whispered.

"Unless you have a very good reason not to," Jethro replied. "It was a gift from Jason."

"Jason gave me a slave pillow?" Tony asked.

"Slave pillow," Jethro repeated. "Now I know what's wrong with the cushion. Have you used the cushion in your room at home?"

Knowing he wasn't allowed to lie to his owner, Tony shook his head. "No."

Jethro sighed. "We will talk about this, but for now - use the damned cushion. The floor is going to get very hard very quickly and you're going to spend a good portion of your day on it."

Tony shifted to sit on the cushion, pulling his knees up to his chest and resting his head on his bent legs. His thoughts were interrupted a few minutes later.

"Here, Tony - something for you to do while I work with the team." Jethro held out a thick manila envelope.

Tony took the envelope, his questioning eyes seeking out Jethro's face.

"Open it," Jethro prodded.

Tony opened the file. "It's my - my father's file."

"Actually, it's *your* case file, Tony. It's all the evidence the F.B.I. was going to use to put you away. My case notes are in there as well. Look it over. I would appreciate your input."

Tony nodded, opening the file. He looked up at Jethro. "Could I - am I allowed to have a pad of paper and a pen or pencil?"

Jethro grinned. "Sure thing, here you go," he said as he tossed a pen to Tony.

Jethro got to his feet and Tony shifted, preparing to rise and follow him. "Sit, Tony. Stay where you are. I'm just going to be right here."

Tony nodded and watched as Jethro walked out into the space between the desks and began talking to his team members. He quickly put the other people out of his mind as he began leafing through the file, absorbing the information and taking notes.
