Shades of Grey by Icka! M. Chif. (G-R)
Fandom: ANIME/MANGA - MAGIC KAITOU
Pairing: Kid/Hakuba/Kuroba
Length: Long (multipart series)
Author on LJ:
ickaimp
Author Website: Mischif.net
Why this must be read:
Magic Kaitou is a manga series that was eventually merged with the author's later work, the more well-known Detective Conan (which was turned into the "Americanized" Case Closed which did not do the series justice). However, Magic Kaitou is a standalone series on its own. The series stars Kuroba Kaito as the "mysterious phantom thief" Kaitou Kid, who uses magic tricks as his gimmick.
And I think it's fair to say
ickaimp is the most prominent fan of the series since she runs the Kaitou Kid fansite - and she's also a pretty talented writer, so that's why I'm spotlighting her series, Shades of Grey.
This is a series that features the eventual coming together of Kaitou and Hakuba. It starts off with the basic blanket scenario, but takes a lot of fun trips as the two grow closer together. Icka has a zany sense of humor and creative mind, and a lot of scenes are just worth squeeing about because they're so fun.
However, there's a couple deeper issues that group the series - Kaitou's dual identity is explored, there's dealing with the Black Organization, and the eventual (inevitable) crossover with Detective Conan as the series builds momentum and plot. This is one of my favorite stories because it speaks to the geeky fangirl in me.
Excerpt:
"Nakamori-keibu is -not- pleased with you." He commented dryly from his chair as the Kid slipped in side the libary's open balcony door, silent as a shadow.
This brought a instantaneous grin to Kid's face. "He didn't like my music choice?" Kid asked too innocently as he straightened, dropping the silent act.
"Somehow I doubt he would have appreciated any variety of music blaring from the police radios." Hakuba struggled to keep a straight face. "But was it imperative that you must choose 'Macho Men'?"
