Of Seas, Flowers and Love by fowl68 (K+)
Fandom: ANIME/MANGA - SPIRITED AWAY
Pairing: Haku/Chihiro
Length: 6K
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:
I'm kind of surprised that
Spirited Away hasn't been recced before since it won an Academy Award (it's just that good). Miyazaki (the director) is kind of the Walt Disney of anime, and everyone should try watching something he's done since he's a creative genius. Trying to describe Spirited Away is difficult since it's a fantasy based in an Asian setting, but I'd sum it up by saying it's the Japanese equivalent of Alice in Wonderland.
Anyway, most of the SA fandom focuses on Haku/Chihiro with a tunnel vision that's kind of amusing since there are other characters. While Of Seas, Flowers and Love is a blatantly Haku/Chihiro fic, it also features Rin and Kamaji.
I love this fic because while it appeals to my Haku/Chihiro OTP fangirl, it also provides an interesting study of life at the bathhouse before Chihiro's arrival. The narrative is set pre, during and post movie, gradually shifting focus from Kamaji, to Rin, to Haku. The tale is full of glorious little details that makes me believe the story.
Excerpt:
The new boy was a lovely thing. With the coal black, straight hair, smooth pale skin and wide eyes the color of summer leaves, he reminded Kamajii of a porcelain doll. But he isn't delicate, despite his slender build. He's got an odd steel in his backbone that got him a job as Yubaba's apprentice. And Kamajii's never heard of anyone staying good underneath Yubaba, but the new boy is different.
He visits with lunch. Two bowls of rice and a newt that will be just a little too crispy, but Kamajii appreciates the gesture. At first, he doesn't speak much, content to eat and watch the coal workers and feeding them grains of his rice. Finally, Kamajii's curiosity gets the best of him.
"What's your name, boy?"
The wide eyes look up at him. They don't look quite like any spirit's Kamajii's ever seen, flickering like they are, though he chalks it up to the boiler flames. "…Haku."
