Why this must be read: Because it gives us believable answers to several questions left unanswered in the movies: Why Luke Skywalker instead of Luke Lars? Why exactly wasn't "Ben" Kenobi welcome at the Lars farm? And what did - or didn't - the Larses know about what had happened to Anakin and the Jedi?
The writing is beautiful; the dialogue feels real; everyone is in character. But the best thing about this story is the way it develops Beru into a strong, serious, no-nonsense yet deeply caring woman who loves her nephew as her own son and who won't be intimidated by any Jedi.
