Sonata for Piano Duo by Alan Harnum
Fandom: ANIME/MANGA - SHOUJO KAKUMEI UTENA (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
Pairing: Kozue/Miki
Length: 3K
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: The Keep
Why this must be read:
Shoujo Kakumei Utena holds a special place in my heart since it (and Evangelion) were my introduction to the mind-fuckery that makes some anime glorious. Utena is a magical girl story on crack, with tons of underlying metaphors and characters who are all screwed up, morally questionable (or reprehensible) and one of the best soundtracks of all time.
It's a classic. And when I think of classic Utena fanfic, I think of Alan Harnum.
This is not a fic for everyone since it features brother/sister incestuous yearning, but it does fit canon and it's not realized so it didn't hit my squick button. I think this is the piece that made me get over my instinctive shudder of distaste toward Kozue since it explores what makes her tick and how she thinks. It's one of the best first person fanfics I've read, unreliable narrator and all, and manages a conversational, yet stream of consciousness tone.
Excerpt:
But, brother, what kind of marriage is held together solely
by trying to make money off your twin prodigies? Do you know how
much they charged for tickets to that concert we never gave? I
do; I found out. I _look into things_ Miki; I don't just go with
the flow and think that everything will work out for me if I'm
_nice_ to everyone.
That kind of thing just doesn't work in the real world, my
sweet. You need to understand that. Worse than I will take
advantage of your innocence--far worse than I.
