Why this must be read: Hi there, y'all--I'll be reccing for Swordspoint this month. Swordspoint and Ellen Kushner's related novels are a fandom very near and dear to my heart (the fact that there was an lj fan following for them was what drove me to get a livejournal to begin with) and I'm hoping to do it justice this month by showing off the range this relatively pretty tiny fandom is capable of. With that in mind, I'd like to start off with something short and fun.
There is a fair amount of angst regarding this general area of time in the canon, between Swordspoint and Privilege Of The Sword, in which time Alec inherits the dukedom, causing a rift between Alec and Richard and contributing to the fact that when we see Alec again in Privilege, he is a very unhappy man. This piece does hint at that, but for all that it's a step in the progression, the Alec we see is still the young man we remember from the first book.
"So, you want to refurbish your rooms?"
"As you know, I have come into considerable resources of late," he drawled. "The whole house, don't you think? What would be the purpose of repairing only our rooms if the rest of the building is falling apart around us?" He looked up at the crumbling plaster crown molding. "It must have been beautiful once. But I suppose the windows and the roof ought to be repaired first. I'm always cold here."
"I am impressed with your practicality. The chimneys don't draw properly either, you know. So, what does St Vier think of your idea?"
"Richard?" He glanced up at her, eyes guarded and suspicious, before giving her a too casual shrug of his shoulders. "He likes it here. He does not want to leave."

Just wondering--was I supposed to ask first? I was kind of mildly panicked that it had taken me a couple of days to get my first rec up, so I didn't take the time to check, but reccing doesn't have the same etiquette as archiving, right? I wouldn't want to step on any toes (especially since I love your stuff so much!).

readre-read (I doubt if there is a Swordspoint fic in existence that I haven't read.no subject
That being said, I read it for the first time so long ago that it never ever occurred to me to look for fanfiction!
This is terribly exciting. You are fantastic for showing me this.

I'm continually surprised by how many things have internet fandoms these days, things I never would have considered ficcing about. It's always such a treat! The Swordspoint fandom is a great one, too, because there are just so many good writers involved. I honestly can't remember ever reading a mediocre Swordspoint fic.
I'm looking forward to making my own recs this month, but if you click the swordspoint tag, the last person to rec for it already has some great fic mentioned.
