A Moment's Grace by Branwyn (PG-13)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Characters: Martha Jones, the Second Doctor, Sally Sparrow
Length: 4500 words
Author on LJ:
cesario
Author Website: fic tag,
Why this must be read:
Martha is Awesome, but even awesome people need a break sometimes when the weight of the world is in their hands. In the epic three-parter Utopia, Last of the Time Lords, and The Sound of Drums, Martha Jones walked a post-apocalyptic Earth for a year and sowed the seeds of the Master's downfall. Although the plan and the final act were the Doctor's, he would have been quite literally powerless without her strength, her courage, her wiliness, her determination, and her persuasiveness. The episode, and most of the stories written about it, focus on what the Doctor endured as the Master's prisoner during that hellish year, or what Jack Harkness suffered. Martha is praised but given little screen time. I love this fic because it's about Martha, about the changes the year that never was made in her, about how she learned and grew. I also love this fic because she gets to meet one of the Doctor's previous incarnations, and learn a little more about him, while still having a logical reason for why he doesn't know her when they first meet. I love the hope she's given at the end.
