Why this must be read:

Man from Uncle is Napoleon and Illya and sometimes Mr. Waverly. There are no memorable recurring female characters, the women cycle in and out of each episode, most often "innocents", sometimes villains. They leave no trace from week to week, less than a handful are remembered in fan fiction.

So After the Affair is an unusual pleasure, a tag to "The Minus-X Affair", told by Leslie, whose experiences with Uncle were not the usual mix of romance and excitement that most "innocents" enjoy. And of course "innocent" is not exactly the right word for Leslie either. She's at loose ends after the final debriefing, lost to her old life and no ideas for a new. It's Illya, with his detached concern--real, but not enough as he well knows--who tries to help her by introducing her to another of the women the Uncle agents have left behind.

I leave the small room without finding out what Napoleon has to offer.

“You are leaving?” Illya Kuryakin stands in the hallway, leaning against one of the gray walls. Gray, gray, gray. Don’t these people know that such a thing as color exists? A little yellow paint and this place... On second thought, paint probably wouldn’t make much of a difference. Maybe gunmetal gray is the color of secrets, and no matter what they painted it, the color would simply fade away into shadows. I tug at the strap of my beaded dress, suddenly aware of how out of place I am here.
