Why this must be read: This story captures all of Jessica's issues and quirks, especially with needing space. It also does a great job with the Carol-Jessica friendship. It does a fantastic job showing Steve Roger's canonical attraction to strong-minded and strong-willed women. You can just see him trying so hard to do the right thing (in his mind) while still respecting Jessica's personality. And the best part of the fic is that while both Jess and Steve have to learn to compromise, neither of them have to change, which means that Jessica gets to stay her cranky, lovable self.
Excerpt:
"You're what?" Steve asks, blinking. He looks like someone's socked the air out of him. "Did you say—"
"Pregnant," I repeat. "Knocked up. With child. In a family way. Bun in the oven. Baby on board—"
"Okay," Steve says, holding up a hand. "All right. I get it." He pauses, looks at my stomach. "It's mine?"
I roll my eyes and put my hands on my hips. "No, genius. I wanted to practice, and I figured you'd make a good dry run." He continues to gape at me. I consider calling him an asshole. "You're being an asshole." It didn't make me feel better because Steve looks like I just punted a puppy for a field goal.
