Why this must be read:

I first encountered pogrebin’s fic through the Harry Potter fandom, and her writing never fails to amaze. This is, so far as I’m aware, her only PoTC fic, and it is incredible, gorgeous and powerful for all that it is brief.

The real truth is:

His hands shake so badly when he pulls the trigger that the bullet sinks into the trunk of a palm tree instead of his head, and the hollow sound the gun makes when he throws it away was what leads him to discover the rum.
