The Fast and the Furious: An Overview

Before I get into a plot synopsis, I want to point out that these are movies about cars. Car porn, if you will. Or, if you're like me and don't know anything about cars, they are movies about the pretty boys who drive the cars and the pretty girls in tiny skirts who like to drape themselves over the hoods. So when I use the word "plot", I am using it in the loosest sense possible. The same would hold true for the words "logic" and "character development".

The Fast and the Furious (2001, directed by Rob Cohen)

Brian O'Conner is undercover in Los Angeles as Brian Earl Spilner, investigating a gang of street racers suspected of truck hijackings, run by Dominic Toretto. Being undercover apparently consists of being really pretty, and batting your long blond eyelashes while you tell lies. But Dom runs a really tight gang, one that's already full of very pretty boys, so he doesn't fall for it, until the night where Brian bets his car against Dom in a race. He loses, but he helps Dom get away when the police show up. The rest of Dom's gang doesn't really trust Brian, but they're SOL because Dom likes the new guy's pretty eyes. Dominic's sister Mia is smitten too. Brian's still supposed to be investigating the gang, but he's a bit distracted by a) how much he likes racing and b) how pretty the Torettos are. Then there's some action sequences and stuff. At the end of the movie, instead of arresting him, Brian gives Dominic the keys to his car and lets him go. Because he loves him.

2 Fast 2 Furious (2003, directed by John Singleton)

So this is the movie that I fondly like to refer to as The Gayest Movie of All Time. As we learn in a little filmlet that's on the DVDs, Brian is now a cop gone bad, on the run. He escaped from LA to Miami, using his mad driving skills and well-tuned ability to flirt with strangers. He's just hanging out on the Miami street-racing scene, when he gets caught and enlisted in another FBI undercover operation. Brian enlists the help of his slightly insane childhood friend Roman Pearce. It turns out that Roman is slightly mad at Brian from something that happened a long time ago, leading to what I like to refer to as The Gayest Movie Fight Sequence of All Time (see Exhibit 1). But they make up, because Brian is pretty and no one can stay mad at him for long. They still bicker a lot though, because it's entertaining. The boys are also working with undercover Customs agent Monica, Brian's love interest in the film. Roman is pretty jealous of her, and those aren't my slash goggles talking. He's really jealous. After a lot of shiny driving sequences which are really thinly veiled metaphors for sex, they take the bad guy down and Roman and Brian ride off into the sunset. Holding hands.

There's a third movie expected in a summer or two, which will follow Dom's adventures on the run.

The Main Characters:

Brian "The Pretty One" O'Conner (Paul Walker)

Dominic "The Broody One" Toretto (Vin Diesel)

Roman "The Crazy One" Pearce (Tyrese)

Sidekicks and bad guys, TFATF:

Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) Dom's sister. Brian's love interest.

Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) Dom's girlfriend. A sexy bad-ass, kind of like all Rodriguez' other characters.

Vince (Matt Schulze), Leon (Johnny Strong), and Jesse (Chad Lindberg) are Dom's crew. You can interpret that however you want.

Johnny Tran (Rick Yune) is the obnoxious leader of a rival gang of Vietnamese racers.

Sidekicks and bad guys, 2F2F:

Suki (Devon Aoki) and Tej (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges) Suki's a racer who likes hot pink, and Tej is a guy who organises stuff and talks really loudly.

Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes) Undercover officer who flirts with Brian and argues with Rome.

Carter Verone (Cole Hauser) A completely psycho drug dealer who the boys are enlisted to help take down.

Cars

Because the cars are characters too. Probably the most important ones are the Dodge Charger (back) and the Toyota Supra (front).
The Charger belonged to Dom's father, who died racing. It's the one that Brian and Dom have a touching heart-to-heart over. "I live my life one quarter-mile at a time." That scene. The Supra is the one that Brian gives to Dom at the end of the movie, allowing him to escape. So it's basically a bright orange symbol of their love.

Exhibit 1:

Pairings

In case it's not obvious by now, this is a fairly slash-oriented fandom. There's het as well, but it's mostly OFC stuff and we won't be going there this month. The fandom OTP is overwhelmingly Brian/Dom, making me kind of a freak in the fandom and the worst person to be doing these recs, but I'll do my best. Brian has also been paired up at least once with pretty much everyone else. *cough*slut*cough*

Most fic shows up on one of these two Yahoo! lists:

There's also a couple of small archives:
Speed, Strength, and Fury.
The Art of Vin Diesel

And that's all you need to know, I think. Happy reading.

You will get some Brian/Dom in, won't you? The pretty overwhelms me, and I can never find decent stuff.

Also, a problem with some of your links and HTML.

Whoot! I'm so glad you'll be recc'ing in this fandom. I haven't read a damned thing because every time I try, I end up reading crap, which is often the case in small fandoms. And normally I would solve this by reading on rec, but none of my friends shares my appreciation for one of the very gayest series ever.

Might I repeat, whoot!

Great overview!

One thing though.

Johnny Tran (Rick Yune) is the obnoxious leader of a rival gang of Korean racers.
While Rick Yune himself is Korean, I'm pretty sure his character is Chinese, as well as his gang.

Thanks for writing this!

I was overwhelmed by the slash in the first movie, and have the second one on my Netflix queue. I went looking for stories after I saw the first film, so I'm eager to see your recs!
