When the Ice Goes Out by Kellie Matthews (NC-17)
Hi there! I'm
pinkpapyrus, and this month I've got the wheel of the due South vandom. (That's right, I've kicked off the month with a pun. *g* What's worse is that I'm kind of proud of it. And even worse than that is that someone's probably already made that pun before. ...So now I'm a little disappointed in myself for making a secondhand bad pun. And also for introducing myself mostly in parentheses.) I'm mainly a fan of Fraser/Kowalski, but I also read gen fic on occasion, so my recs will be either F/K or gen.
For my first rec, I'm going with the only fic that has ever gotten me to put my hand over my heart and wibble.
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Length: ~220k

Why this must be read:
This is one of only a few epic-length fics that I've ever felt compelled to read in one sitting. Usually I like to savor them since they don't crop up all that often, but this time, oh. I had to read it all, and as soon as possible.
What made this fic excellent for me, apart from its fantastic writing and stellar characterization, is how deeply it made me feel. I mean, of course I love Fraser and Ray, and I love Fraser/Ray, so deep feelings are a given going into most good fic. But something about the way they're written here made me even more invested than I normally am.
I've only read it twice because I can't imagine reading it part-by-part. It's an all-in-one-go-or-nothing sort of fic, and one of the finest gems I've come across in this fandom. Highly recommended!
"[...] I'm afraid I'm not a big help, I'm sorry, Fraser."
"It's all right. If you think of anything else, leave a message with Elaine, she'll make sure I get it."
She nods and stands. "I don't suppose you'd like to stay for supper?"
I shake my head. "No, I need to get back, but thank you kindly."
She smiles. "Wow, it's been a long time. It's nice to hear that again." She looks at me again, bites her lip, then looks determined as she plows ahead. "So, um, did you and Ray have a fight or something? Is that why you left?"
"No, it was just . . . my reasons were personal. I felt I needed to go."
"Oh. I thought maybe . . . well, that maybe the two of you were . . . and you maybe . . . ."
"We were never involved that way," I interrupt gently, saving her from the awkwardness of having to put her hypothesis into words. "I don't believe that Ray has those kind of feelings for me."
"You don't?" She sounds surprised.
