Why this must be read:

Okay, gotta back up here a little. I first encountered the movie Stargate at a free pre-release showing in a lecture hall during grad school; [livejournal.com profile] the_gadgetman had thought it sounded interesting and pulled me out of the lab to go see it with him. Overall, the reception to the movie wasn't great - I don't know what the crowd was expecting, but it wasn't what they got. I, however, loved it; especially the Daniel-Jack relationship. That the guys around me didn't get what was important about the movie made it that much better.

We were pleased when Stargate SG-1 premiered, and I watched the first few seasons; but then I had my first child, and lost my appetite for watching anything except men's professional golf (seriously) for a few years. Reading? I didn't read anything except baby care books and infant- and mothering-focused anthropology.

In 2000, I was ready for fiction again, and somehow stumbled onto SG-1 fanfic. I'd read other fic over the years - Star Trek zines in the early 1980s, X-Files shipper fic in the mid-90s - but only a few stories had ever grabbed me like that early SG-1 gen h/c.

For years, I'd thought this story by Jmas was the first SG-1 fanfic I'd ever read, but the dates don't quite work. Doesn't matter; it's what hooked me.

The relationship here between Jack and Daniel doesn't reflect who they are in later SG-1 and into SGA and SGU: it's two thousand words of Jack and Daniel crying in each other's arms, people! But sometimes, yk, I still need to read something like this.

This sort of h/c is intolerable if the author doesn't know what she's doing with language, story construction, and emotion (ours as much as the characters'). Jmas is expert at all three.

A snippet:

Small drops of tears fell and soaked into Jack's shirt…a warm but welcome wetness on his shoulder reassuring him Daniel was still alive, still hanging on…

Small drops of blood seeped ever faster through Daniel's shirt and into Jack's already crimson-stained hands…

Small drops of life slipping away too, too quietly with only an occasional sighing breath to mark the knowledge unspoken but clearly understood between them…

- - - -

Yeah, if you like this sort of fic - if you ever need this sort of fic - you'll love this story.
