Why this must be read: - At the end of TSbyBS, Blair is offered a detective's badge and a place in Major Crime. Stories that have him accepting and becoming a cop usually go with this scenario. This story takes a more realistic view of Blair's situation; the Union objects to his getting a detective's rank without having spent time as a Patrol officer.
This results in a bad situation (for Blair in particular) that just keeps getting worse and worse and in many ways more and more convoluted. Skilfully mixed with the main theme are subplots. One involves the problems Jim, temporarily partnered with Megan, is having with his senses; another, the way Blair's Patrol partner is manipulating their Captain; while a minor one, with the Patrol Captain avoiding the Public Affairs Officer, adds a light touch.
Jael Lyn is an extremely good writer, whose stories never disappoint. I count this as one of her best.
