Why this must be read:

LoTR is a fandom with many AU stories, and no small number of them fall into the category "Boromir lives." The Captain and the King also falls into this category, but unlike most of the AU's that do, this story doesn't forget why Boromir died in the first place -- redemption. From the beginning to the end, this story keeps that theme squarely in the forefront, and it makes for a fascinating journey.

The AU premise is that Saruman believes the heir of Isildur carries the One Ring, and the Uruk-Hai are sent to capture Men rather than Hobbits. Boromir does, indeed, live, but from the outset his life is changed forever. The rest of the tale, from Amon Hen through the end of the War and beyond, is rewritten in this novel-length story.

Slash fans should not bail on this story because it's labelled as gen. Particularly between Aragorn and Boromir in the early chapters, it is very slashy. It's one of those gen stories that's more slashy than a lot of slash, because the characters and relationships are at the heart of it; sex isn't there to substitute (or get in the way of) genuine emotional punch.

I could go on and on about the many things that make this story wonderful, but I will leave them for you to discover. Merry fans in particular will find a lot to appreciate; the friendship between Boromir and Merry is one of my favorite things about this story.

Read the story at one of these two links, rather than on the author's site -- the story is complete, but it hasn't been updated at the author's site. (FYI, the sequel is in progress at ff.net.)

LiveJournal is mangling the links when I try to make them pretty, but here they are:
